Sonu(Prashant Nanda) belongs to a small village named Lakhipur, on the banks of the river Ganga. Sonu is poor and lives with his mother(Leela Mishra). Sonu is very hard working, independent and an honest person of the village. One day he finds a woman on the river banks in an unconscious state. So he rescues the woman and with the advice of his good friend Heera(Baldev Khosla), Sonu take her home with him. For a few days Sonu and his mother takes care of her and finds out that her name is Geeta(Zarina Wahab) and she belong to a wealthy family. As Geeta recovers Sonu decides to take her home, but he finds that her uncle and aunt Ramkali(Shubha Khote) dislike her and are not ready to take her back. So, with no other alternative, Sonu again takes Geeta to his home. As days pass, Sonu's mother decides to get Geeta and Sonu married. But before she could convey her thoughts, she dies. Now Sonu and Geeta live together in one home but this creates a bad impression on the village people. So, village people and the leader decide and tell Sonu to leave Geeta as soon as possible. Sonu dislikes this behaviour of the villagers and starts finding a suitable life partner for Geeta who is wealthy, honest and would take care of her. So one day, he finds a doctor who has come to the village in order to eradicate the plague amongst the victims. Soon the doctor agrees to marry Geeta, but the doctor fails to come on that day, he had promised Sonu. Sonu gets disappointed and angry and he leaves the village to find out why the doctor had not fulfilled his promise. Soon He comes to know from the doctor's mother that he died in an accident on his way to the wedding. Now the villagers get angry with Sonu as he is not paying any heed. Soon they burn his boat in order to teach him a lesson. After an highly melodramatic drama, the villagers realise their mistake and forgive Sonu. Now Sonu and Geeta fall in love and they marry each other.
