Nilima Das was born in Kolkata in the month of June of 1929. Her father’s name was Mathuranath Das and mother was Suhasini Debi. After the death of her husband Suhasini Debi was forced to joined films and ultimately recognized as one of the finest actress of the films and the stage. Nilima Das was convent educated. 1944 she came in contact with Haren Ghose and with his troupe she went to foreign countries to perform dance.
Haren Ghose introduced her with director Pashupati Chatopadhay. Nilima Das made her debut film in “Parbhritika” directed by Bidhyak Bhattacharya in 1947 though she first started shooting for Pashupati Chattopadhay’s film “Arakhhainiya” which was released later in 1948. After that she appeared as a dancer in Hindi film “Arabin Nights” and her dance was highly praised. Her major film were “Putul Nacher Itikatha”, “Baikunther Will”, “Ratri” in Bengali. And in Hindi “Naag Pash”, “Twenty Fifth July”, “Anmol Sahara”, “Bagdad” etc. Her best performance was in “Kabi” in the role of “Basan”. In this film she also sang. She was a regular actress of Star Theatre. She also acted in Radio Drama.
