A family migrates from the village to Calcutta for a better living. Calcutta was then thought of as a place of wealth. However, when they come to Calcutta they find it difficult to survive. They live on boiled pulses. They keep borrowing food from their neighbours. The elder daughter is liked by a local tea stall owner Vishu. An old beggar living in the adjacent room has a bag which seems very interesting to Preetilata as she thinks there is rice in the bag. Their condition grows worse. Preetilata then thinks of stealing the bag from the old man’s house. Just as she is entering the house to steal, the beggar comes back. There is a scuffle between the two after which the beggar dies. Preetilata brings the bag of rice and cooks it for everyone. That day even Braj has managed to get some money from Prabhat. They have a feast but Preetilata does not eat much as she is full of guilt. After eating she starts vomiting. With the passage of time their situation worsens. Lathi is run over by a motor car and killed. Juthi flees with Vishu and Preetilata and Braj immerse themselves in grief.
