“Nirjan Saikote” is a film created by the legendary film maker Tapan Sinha which tantalizingly demarcates the psychological mystic connection amongst man, eternity & nature. The film was adapted from novelist Samaresh Basu’s award winning novel “Nirjan Saikate”.
What appeals the audience is the way Sinha demonstrates the bohemian protagonist & his experience after arriving at Puri (Orissa). Camera work, especially the long & mid long shots captured & framed over the vast sea beach of Puri are absolutely scintillating. It turns even the most avid cynic into a 17th century romantic. The art work, dialogues & screenplay are all very natural & go according to the message & feel of the film. The sequence involving Ruma Guha Thakurata & Anil Chatterjee on a terrace deserves special kudos. The camera (in this sequence) travels over every nook & corner of Puri (of the early 1960’s) giving the shot an eternal feel. The cast comprises of Anil Chatterjee, Ruma Guha Thakurata, Chhaya Debi, Robi Ghosh & Sharmila Tagore & all of them romp in with historical performances. The music by Kalipada Sen captures the mysticism embedded in the script (as well as in the novel).
This critically acclaimed & commercially accepted extravaganza would be a delight for any movie voyeur. Worth a watch!
