Films based on Current topics or controversial topics have been eye catching all over the world. People want to know above the news material. But then it’s again on the film maker who either tries to show the reality behind the headlines or just cash in over the controversial issues. Ram Gopal Varma has been among those few directors who tries to bring us something different every time, most of the times he succeeds as a film maker and at many times fail to catch the pulse of the audience. This time he brings us the story which is based on Neeraj Grover’s murder case. Let’s find out whether there is more for us to know after watching marathon of news programs over this case or it might be just a collage of all the article, news features, rumors etc we have read, seen or heard.

“Not A Love Story” is story of a struggling actress Anusha {Mahi Gill} who comes to Mumbai leaving behind her lover Robin { Deepak Dobriyal}. Anusha fails to get a lead role in the movie after lots of struggle. Finally with help of her friends she meets Aashish {Ajay Gehi} who works for a corporate movie firm. Aashish helps Anusha bad a lead role in their next production thus they along with other friends party till late night. After the party Aashish on his way to drop Anusha comes close to her . Next morning Anusha finds Robin at her doorsteps. With Aashish in bed room and Robin waiting outside what does Anusha do ? well that’s when the trill begins.

Story is highly inspired by Neeraj Grover’s Murder case, but out here the character names are changed. When will we have films where the makers will make is totally real just like the makers all over the globe. It’s so superficial of them to leak out in interviews that my films is inspired or made of so and so case and when you see the film there whole names and other details are changed. Screenplay is tight and gripping. The first half moves so fast that you don’t have time to think also. Even post interval all the aftermath scenes are total engrossing. The Audition of Anusha, Her Bonding with Aashish, Robin and Anusha’s Love Making Scene, Disposal of Body, Anusha’s Nightmare, Female cop interrogating Anusha, Robin’s confession, Lawyers talk with Robin & Anusha, Court Room Scenes and more are the highlight scenes from the film. On the flip side the whole murder scenes were bit amateurish and dint capture the rage of the characters. Also the open ended climax leaves you totally unsatisfied. Editing is good and crisp. Camera work is far better than last few films of RGV, still his crazy touch keeps coming in between.

Music is very average. The remix version of Rangeela keeps on playing throughout the film, making you remember that once upon a time RGV was so musical. From R.D.Burman, A.R.Rahman, Vishal Bhradwaj to Sandeep Chowta he had given us so many great tracks. Sadly he has become horrible in this department of film making.

Ram Gopal Varma has attempted another film on news based topic and thanks to his direction or let’s say the goriness in the story keeps you glued to the silver screen. But we expect Ram Gopal Varma to move ahead to next level where he can openly show the real characters and the real verdict. The open ended climax does not go with the mood of the film. Thankfully he has restrained himself from unnecessary experimenting with technical department of film making this time. Ya he has tried to use the natural light only in the film, which at times add plus point to the film and sometimes felt unwanted.

Deepak Dobriyal gives a fine performance, especially in the rage scenes or the police custody scenes. But the movie belongs to Mahi Gill for portraying her fine performance throughout the film. She slips in easily in the role of a struggling actress and later as the scheming mind behind the whole event. Ajay Gehi in small role is fine. Zakir Hussain gives good support along with Darshan Jariwal and many more.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai kaafi hard hitting aur gripping dum hai. The movie might not appeal to the soft movie lovers as it has some good gore moments and hard hitting scenes. Also the movie is total gripping and engrossing, except for the finale where it fizzles out. As for all Ram Gopal Varma camera moments haters, you might have some moments to get upset in the film. We all know how much RGV loves to rotate camera and show us the weird angles {Without even thinking that it might show his lead actors in bad way}. Many times I do think that for this love of RGV towards such weird camera angles – “Iss Pyaar Ko Main Kya Naam Du..”
