When Indian cinema saw its Inception, films were mostly based on mythology and historic characters. As the industry grew, many others genres were explored and slowly these films got confined to low budget films and finally found their place in small screen. But one can still never forget gems like ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba’ or ‘Surya Putra Shanidev’ or ‘Bajrangbali’, and of course the epic 1975 hit ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’. Among these, there also came few films where God appears, as a sign of purity, in modern times in order to change the atheists. Some were classics like Sanjeev Kumar’s ‘Yehi hai zindagi’ or Mithun’s ‘Parmatma’ and few more, yes we did witness some damp squibs like Manoj Kumars 'Kalyug aur Ramayan' etc. Now after ages comes a film based on similar theme, which is adaptation of a renowned Gujarati play 'Kanji Viruddh Kanji' starring, still the best comedian of our times, Paresh Rawal along with Akshay Kumar as the God. So let's find out whether this film will connect with its audience or just ends up to be a good concept gone awry. Let’s find out..

' OMG Oh My God!' is story of Kanji Mehta (Paresh Rawal) an atheist who runs an antique shop, duping his clients in the name of god day and night. One fine day, his shops get destroyed in an earthquake and the insurance company rejects his claim stating it as act of god. This irks Kanji and thus he decides to sue God. What happens next is what the entire film about.

The story is indeed quite different and unusual. Screenplay is superb in parts, especially working effectively in all the court-room trial scenes and debates. There are some Super applauding sequences like Paresh conning in name of god, Paresh at insurance office and the whole ‘act of god’ theory, Paresh first court case date, Akshay’s morning breakfast, Paresh at Tisca Chopra’s show, Court’s second hearing followed by the milk theory and the final court hearing, Akshay-Paresh talks in I.C.U and few more. All the theories proposed by Paresh Rawal are superb and one does connect with his debates making him a hardcore Atheist, but the film-makers forgot to capture why he became a non-believer at first place, or why no one accused him of using God’s name to con people, while he was trying to prove the same point for all the godmens {Mithun, Govind Namdeo, Poonam Jhawar, Etc}. Also there are few more negative points like the whole family discussion at the earthquake site followed by the Sp.Effects used in entry of Akshay Kumar and the Anti Climax part {When Paresh is in ICU}. All these points hamper the smooth sailing of the narrative. Camera work is strictly average. Editing is crisp in first half, and could have been much better in the second.

Music, by Himesh Reshamiya and others, is nice enough, with ‘Go Go Go Govinda’ providing for the mandatory foot-tapper. It’s always a great treat to watch Prabhudeva dancing along with Sonakshi Sinha. ‘Hare Rama’ should have been used better. ‘Main To Nahin’ is a fantastic song and picturised equally beautifully. Background music is fine.

The expectations soared high from the time Paresh Rawal announcing about this adaptation. What still remained a worry was how much justice would Umesh Shukla, who has directed some fantastic plays but came up with duds like ‘Dhoondte Reh Jaoge’ when it came to the big screen, do to it. And here too, his lack of deft skills at directing a movie shows, and that’s where one begins wondering if another experienced director would have done wonders with this kind of script, someone like Rajkumar Hirani, etc. But the wonderful writing, screenplay and some fantastic performances more than make up for its faults. Another point worth a mention is how the film never becomes preachy at any point.

Paresh Rawal is superb in an author-backed role, after what’s perhaps seems like the longest lull in his career phase. The way he debates and presents his logic, one actually begins to enjoy his atheism. Akshay Kumar looks perfectly apt for his role, looking very dashing and handsome and donning a smile that will but remind you of the actors who played Lord Krishna in movies and television serials. Mithun Chakraborty as one of the god men along with Govind Namdeo are brilliant. Watch out for Mithun in a special dance performance, he is totally in his character. Lubna Salim, Murli Sharma, Mahesh Manjrekar and Poonam Jhawar are just about passable in their parts. Om Puri and Tisca Chopra shine out in their small cameos.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ iss film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hain for all those people who love feel-good type of cinema. The movie portrays the modern day approach towards God and the happenings around us. Though you might agree with all the atheist statements in the beginning but towards the end, your faith in god will be restored. So all you feel-good movie lover and people who love watching films on such themes, Go Go Go and watch this film.
