Crime thrillers have an impeccable record of lacklustre music and barely charbusters. In most of the movies, you wont come across tracks that you would like to put on your player and enjoy. Pritam, the hit machine holds the helm for Once Upon a time in mumbaai but can he change the scenario and move beyond the myth?
The album opens with the already a rage track 'Pee loon' which is a Mohit Chouhan solo. 'Pee Loon' is not just beautifully rendered but carries some beautiful poetic lines that only helps the song to catch on to your lips without any delay. Emraan Hashmi is well assured of another hit song under his sleeves. 'Pee Loon' is a romantic track with the backdrop of qawaali which makes the song a soothing fare. Brilliant!
It arrives in a remix version too, which is passable, yet one can give it a try. Its not bad for sure like the usual remixes.
Follows another romantic track 'Tum Jo Aaye', which is a duet by Tulsi Kumar and the silky voiced Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Like 'Pee Loon' this too carries a bit of sufi flavour with it, which goes very well with the song. Tulsi Kumar marks off the song while Rahat joins in after a minute has passed. This romantic track is sure to be a favourite among the youth as well as the oldies.
'Tum Jo Aaye' also features in a reprise version, which is a solo by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The arrangements here are different and so are the music and lyrics. It is a well deserved reprise version, which would catch on to you instantly as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan croons this track in is sufi silky voice.
If you go back to the 70s n 80s crime movie, you would notice one thing in common. Cabaret. Yes, u guessed it right, as OUATIM belongs to the retro era, how could it be complete without a cabaret track? And what more can you ask for when Piya Tu ab tu aa jaa and Duniya mein Logon ko are remixed so well into each other creating the right set of impact on the listener? Its not a usual remix of tracks, as Pritam majorly comes up with his own composition here for this Sunidhi Chauhan solo, making it only better as he mixes the two classic songs quite well into it. The track stands out as the best track from the album and is sure to take you back to those cabaret days in our movies, which we loved.
Pritam and Emraan Hashmi have been responsible for giving KK his n number of hits. And they are in for one more as KK omes up for a solo romantic ' I am in Love'. A ballad at heart, this track is quite addictive and as it progresses you only get poised in. KK steals the show here with ease.
The track features in two more versions, the first being a reprise version which is sung by Karthik, who provides an extra layer of softness to the song, thus assuring his composer of the faith with which he went ahead for another version of the same track with the same lyrics.
It appears in a dance mix as well, which is mixed quite well for a club track and makes up for a good listen.
Lastly comes a fast paced, glossy, goon song 'Baburao mast hai', which is an instant hit from the word go. Mika leads the track and brings every flavour of the song that it required. The lyrics are perfect for a 'bhai' song, and Mika provides full justice to it with his excellent rendition.
On the whole OUATIM is an excellent album, with which you will surely fall in love, sooner or later. Easily the album of the year for me.
