Since it’s an Indian film I recollect some great actors who did some memorable roles despite of age or health being a big barrier. I remember Balraj Sahani doing Garam Hawa, Meena Kumari doing Paakeza, Prithviraj Kapoor doing Mughal E Azam, Sashi Kapoor doing Muhafiz and few more. But that seems to be a historic chapter of Indian cinema, in recent times no one has even come nearer to attempt something which their age and health does not support. But then there is an important man in Indian cinema who has always taken the Indian Cinema and his stardom to an upper level breaking all the previous attempt and he is none another than Amitabh bachchan. Few years back he did films like Kaante, Black, Sarkaar and The Last Lear, but recent few films of his were just to obligate some or another and thus disappointing the movie lovers. This time he enters a lane which has never been traveled by any of Indian actor, yes we have some references from international cinema but then all those were young actors playing a part of old person thus making this more special.

“Paa” is a story of Auro {Amitabh bachchan} who is suffering from a rare disease called progeria where his body grows around 5 times of his normal age. Auro is 12 years old and looks like a 70 years old, he lives with his mother Dr.Vidya {Vidya Balan} and his Grandmother {Arundhati Nag} and has loads of friends who loves him in his school. He meets a young and dynamic M.P Amol Arte {Abhishek Bachchan} who gives prize to Auro in his school and thus starts a love and hate relation between both of them. Little do they know that they both are related to each other as father and son? How does the truth unfold and what happens next is to be watched and not to be read.

Story is simple and sweetly woven, focusing more on the relationship of the trio {Father-Mother and Son}. It’s not about any education on the disease or effects of this disease, etc. In fact the makers have just used the disease as a part of the story. Screenplay is superb and there are many brilliant scenes woven in it, like Auro’s Introduction scene, Auro’s Excitement for Delhi trip, Vishnu and Auro’s Talk on Father –Son relationship, Auro comparing himself with Amol, Auro potty talks, Amol visiting Auro’s Room, Auro and the little girl chapter, the climax shot between Amol and Auro and many more. All this scene gives you lump in through or a sweet smile on your face. Editing is good but needs some trimming at few places as the pace of the film is bit slow at times but {read} not boring. Camera work is of top notch and Makeup artist of Amitabh Bachchan deserves full marks for such great work.

Music by Illayaraja is sweet and soothing and goes well with the film. Mudi Mudi, Hitchki and Meri Maa are superb. But the best is the theme music of the film.

Director Balki had showed us that that he can make us digest a 64 year old and 34 year old love story with a ease and now shows us this unusual and different relationship story in his own style. He has kept the feel of the film on the lighter note and has taken full efforts to make it non preachy or like a documentary, etc. he success in his mission and gives us a feel good film with great performance by Amitabh Bachchan. Wish he had kept the pace a level up in the middle of the film as it would have helped more in the favor of the film.

It’s been so many years that many people are waiting to see the downfall of Amitabh Bachchan, and whenever they felt they are on the verge of seeing it this man does something unusual and all those people have to eat their words. Out here too Amitabh Bachchan delivers a fantastic and life time performance which is nowhere inspired by Hollywood films like Jack or Curious case of Benjamin Button {I fail to understand why whenever something different or good work is done in Indian cinema we forcefully try to associate with the international films}. Check out his body mannerism, his talking style, His facial expression, His eyes expression and when you do that please keep in mind the age of this gentleman. He has again raised the bar of great acting for himself and all other actors. Abhishek Bachchan does a good job and looks great in the role of young politician. Vidya Balan is perfect for this role and adds her charm to it. Arunditi Nag gives a sweet performance. Paresh Rawal was wasted. Vishnu and the girl in Auro’s School were superb.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hain dum ?

Dum ?? Boss this stuff is above all the dum you have watched in Indian cinema. Film might work for some and might not for most but one thing is sure you have to watch it for this performance of Amitabh Bachchan and should feel proud about it. For all those Masala movie or Mindless movies lovers please avoid this fine piece of cinema and go for “Radio” in next screen.
