My Rating

  • a week of stellar performances...

Paan Singh Tomar rating: 7 out of 10(gaurav mathur wrote on 04 Mar 2012)

Watching paan singh tomar was like watching a sequel to virat kohli's knock a few days back.u know both have the potential to play a big knock but not sure if they can steal the show single handedly considering the circumstances.but once its over you leave your seats with the reassurance that true talent will shine, circumstances notwithstanding.coincidentally virat also came into bat to shut television sets(considering sachin and sehwag were out by then)just like this movie, running pretty much to empty halls...

paan singh tomar, arguably is irfan khan's best performance till date beating haasil, with dhulia again at the helm, and even surpassing the more subtle namesake .irfan lives the role from an athelete to a dacoit, or baaghi as he himself says "bihad mein toh baaghi hote hain...dacait toh parliament mein hote hain".the clincher though is when after becoming a dacoit one of his sidekicks is tying up the businessman's spoilt son whom they have kidnapped and irfan khan then asks him why is he typing him this the sidekick replies he is doing so to ensure that he does not run away.irfan khan nonchalantly replies saying "bhagke humse kahan jaayega",intending to say he has been an athelete and that spoilt brat sure can't run faster thank him.

The film is pretty much of two halves. one of paan singh being an athelete and the other a baaghi, by now have started to believe in that dialogue, strung together with a script having humour at its core.Unusual isnt it, that the story of an athelete turned baaghi can be told with so much light-heartedness.for example irfan khan telling his kids on a couple occasions to go out and get "lemon choos" for themselves and not come back soon so that he can use the opportunity to get lucky with his wife.its moments like this that make up for the slight slow pace of the movie.while then end might seem predictable the first half surely makes up for it.

coming back to khan, yes "khan" and a more worthy one at that title, is riveting when playing the athelete.he not just looks but literally runs the part too.we definitely know that playing an athelete won't come naturally to him but not for a moment does he make you feel like that.its when he plays the "baaghi" that you know he has slipped into his comfort zone and a role that has probably been written for him and honestly this is when the movie dips a bit and only because just sometime back khan has surprised you."baaghi" you know is any day a cakewalk for this "khan".

another winner that emerges is tigmanshu dhulia.delivering a movie that is one notch above his previous, sahib biwi aur know this is the guy who made haasil pairing up again with his favourite "khan" and this pair definitely rocks.

coming back to what i started writing my review with - comaparing two kick ass performances of the week gone by.the sad part is that while virat's innings is sure to fetch him a few crores with brands queueing to sign him up the sad part might be that paan singh tomar might still run to relatively empty halls and the housefull board will be reserved for housefull 2 a movie that releases a month from now...again that's a story for another review but very very unfortunate...
