Paapi, a new Bengali film starring Prasenjit, Sayantika, Pooja Bharti and Bollywood Arya Babbar is an unusual film which is not very impressive. Though people thought that it would be a big action thriller, it isn’t a thriller and certainly not a proper revenge tale. In fact the film is a landmark film for Tollywood in certain ways. Firstly the story first-
Nirmal, a lawyer is framed by his friend Aditya on false charges and he is suspended. Years later their paths cross under extraordinary circumstances. It seems that Aditya had befriended a girl Pia while on a trip while on a trip to Musssorie, had assumed a false identity, had even married her, got close to her, dumped her and then fled.Pia had managed to locate him in Kolkata, but he had refused to recognize her.Pia had been shocked at his response and had tried to commit suicide, but had survived. The cop investigating the case Jyoti (incidentally who has a soft corner for Nirmal) asks Nirmal to read Pia‘s diary and he decides to help Pia.He approaches Aditya and warns him.He destroys Nirmal slowly .Nirmal decides to get back to Pia.His friend Sandeep calls Pia for an interview for a job. When she lands up there, she is shocked to find him there. She tries to flee, but Sandeep stops her. She kills Sandeep in self defense.Aditya who is also present there physically assaults her.Pia goes to jail. Her case comes up in court and Nirmal fights her case in court since his suspension period is over. Since Aditya has threatened the witnesses from before, no one from Pia‘s side appears as a witness. A particular event makes the judge realize the truth and in the court, he passes the sentence whereby Pia goes free and Aditya goes to jail for 7 years.
The film gives equal footage to Prasenjit, Arya Babbar and Pooja Bharti though Sayantika is a little left behind and the three above mentioned names becomes the three central characters. The film starts on an interesting note, but then it somehow completely distorts the mind. The reason is this must be the boldest mainstream film ever to have been made in Tollywood. In fact it would put any Bollywood mainstream film to shame. The lovemaking sequences in Mussoorie are so long that after some time people start thinking whether they are watching a Bengali mainstream film or a soft porn film. Some people might even get embarrassed if they come with their families. Why, to think of it, there are lovemaking sequences of every kind including one where Pooja Bharti wears a bikini and to think of it and it would seem as if Arya Babbar and Pooja Bharti are veterans when it comes to the actual ‘game’. The music is very umimpressive. This is a very ordinary role for Prasenjit and so he does what he has to, only that he has an actress Sayantika who is half his age in this film who is okay. The character of Aditya played by Arya has been created in such a way that people will feel like throttling him and spitting at him in disgust. That part has been successful, but the worst part is Arya himself. Is the Arya whom we saw in 'Jail' and impressed us? He has been able to be ‘Aditya, but the point is as ‘Rahul’ firstly, he is terrible and completely blank and he is bad as Aditya. His dubbed voice neither suits him and seems very weird, hoarse and out of context. The most impressive will be Telugu actress Pooja Bharti who shows her body, but also acts as well. Then there are a few absurdities in the story-imagine a judge deciding to hold a court session right in the middle of the road because he thought it to be appropriate !Also an ACP(Assistant Commissioner of Police) is not an IPS.An ACP(An Additional Commissioner of Police) is an IPS.But then that is known only by educated people and they are extremely less in number in the industry.OH!There is also a song which goes ‘Bhai Ke Sala Banao’ where Jyoti the cop(Played by Sayantika) sings and dances wearing various outfits including minis and tries to woo Nirmal! Is anything left to be said?
