Padma Debi was born in Kolkata in the year 1917. Her real name was Nilima. Her father’s name was Pataki Bhattacharya. She could not continue her studies as she was married at the age of nine.

After seven years of married life one day her Marine Engineer husband all on a sudden became untraceable. Padma Debi fell in a deep trouble. To bring up her two children she was forced to join the film industry. She made her debut in a Hindi film “Vir Keshari” at the age of 15 in 1932. Her first Bengali film was “Chand Saudagar” which was released in 1934 and was directed by Prafulla Roy. To do more films she started learning English, Hindi, Telegu, Urdu and Punjabi language. The first color film made in India was “Krishna Kanaiya” under the banner of Imperial Film Company. Padma Deb was the female lead of that film. She acted in many Hindi Films along with Urdu, Tamil and Telegu films. In Bengali films she was mostly seen as the loving mother either of the male lead or the female lead. Padma Deb died on January 31st, 1983.
