KISHORILAL (AMRISH PURI) IS AN NRI BUT HIS HEART IS IN HIS HOMELAND INDIA. HE COMES BACK HOME & MEETS HIS OLD FRIEND SURAJ DEV (ALOK NATH). KISHORILAL IS IMPRESSED WITH THE TRADITIONAL VALUES WHICH HIS FRIEND HAS INSTILLED IN HIS DAUGHTER, GANGA (MAHIMA CHAUDHARY). SO HE REQUESTS GANGA’S HAND IN MARRIAGE FOR HIS WESTERNIZED SON, RAJIV (APURVA AGNIHOTRI) & HOPES THAT GANGA WILL TRANSFORM HIS SON INTO BEING MORE INDIAN. ARUJUN (SHARUKH KHAN), THE ADOPTED SON OF KISHORILAL WHO IS A STRUGGLING MUSICIAN HAS LIVED IN AMERICA FOR FEW YEARS BUT IS INDIAN AT HEART. SO KISHORILAL DECIDES TO SEND HIS ADOPTED SON ARJUN TO GANGA’S PLACE TO APPROVE HER FOR MARRIAGE WITH RAJIV. SOON RAJIV JOINS THEM & BOTH ARE READY TO MARRY EACH OTHER. SO THE ENGAGEMENT IS DONE IN INDIA & THE WEDDING IS PLANNED IN AMERICA. GANGA IS SENT OFF TO AMERICA TO EXPERIENCE & UNDERSTAND THE LIFE THERE. SOON GANGA REALIZES THAT RAJIV ISN’T WHAT ARJUN HAS TOLD HER. IN A DRUNKEN STATE RAJIV TRIES TO RAPE GANGA BUT GANGA MANAGES TO RUN AWAY. ARJUN FINDS HER AT A TRAIN STATION CRYING & HER CLOTHES TORN. ARJUN INSISTS THAT GANGA SHOULD GO BACK TO RAJIV’S HOUSE. AFTER KNOWING THE WHOLE STORY ARJUN AGREES TO SEND HER BACK TO INDIA TO HER FAMILY. SURAJ DEV IS MISINFORMED ABOUT THE CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH ARJUN HAS BROUGHT GANGA BACK TO INDIA. SOON A RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPS BETWEEN GANGA AND ARJUN AND BRAVING ALL OPPOSITION AND SUSPICION, THEY TIE THE KNOT.
