Well.. am an ardent fan of most Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay novels.. since i have this inherent liking for this perfect adaptation of the great story. How Shekhar, Lolita, Girish etc comes truly alive in this cinematic masterpiece is a treat to watch. Debutant Vidya Balan as Lolita absolutely sizzles in her part. Saif Ali Khan is known for his acting skills (by now) so i shall leave it at that- DO check him out as the egoistic lover. It amazes me as the plot is set in the backdrop of Old Kolkata in the 60's yet these actors succeed with amazing grace and elaan withought ever going over-the-top !! The ones to check out are Sabyasachi Chakraborty as the scheming autocrat father, Ninaad Kamaat as Shekhar's friend, Raima Sen as Koyal and Dia Mirza. It would be unjust to name a few characters as each almost fit one's role to the T. Kudos to the director and the playwright for being able to deliver Sarat Babu's novel so beautifully and effortlessly on the celluloid. The music is befitting and all in all the movie has an ancient classy touch to it !
Bonus : Sanjay Dutt performing the Dhunuchi naach to finnesse and Amitabh Bachchan's voice as the Narrator !
Try and grab the DVD. This one is surely for a collection.
