Partner - A Catastrophic Copy
What Shankar Roy capitivates through "PARTNER" in 2008, Rajen Tarafdar ventured it way back in 1964 (Jiban Kahini, starring: Bikash Roy, Anup Kumar, Sandhya Roy). "partner" is thus a disastrous "remake"(read it copy) of Rajen Tarafdar's all time comic extravaganza "Jiban Kahini". Jeet and Santu sadly fail to create even half the magic created by the Bikash-Anup duo more than 40 years ago. Monotosh Chakraborty's screenplay is pedestrian and disallows the actors to blossom within the blungeoned battered script. Shankar Roy is not a great copier, leave alone direction. Jeet looks good in glares and glossy costumes. But don't ask for expressions and enactions. Santu Mukhopadhyay and Swastika share the screen for the maiden time as father and daughter. The real life father-daughter share considerable camaraderie between them. But the movie ultimately stands upon the bonhomie amongs the characters of Santu and Jeet. This where Shankar Roy fails and hence the whole pack of cards collapse miserably. One my feel that the director had an intention to produce a crystal clear comedy. It's true and tragic that nowadays the Bengali audience do not get "normal " movies quite easily, but what's more tragic is that one has to steal images and frames from a 1964 classic to recreate a "normal" and decent family film. Our directors feel thatwe have forgotten the legacy created by the greats of Bangla bioscope. May be Shankar Roy has taken this chance. But sorry, Mr. Roy. We haven't forgotten the films created by Rajen Tarafdar nor we have forgotten the ideas which the greats imparted within us.The music by Ashok Raj is the sole silver lining of this movie. The songs are astonising melodious. (Specially Tumi Raatporir Rupkatha......) and the outdoor schedules are quite scenic. Santu Mukhopadhay and Dipankar Dey give in solid performance as individuals but what undermines ever effort of "PARTNER" is that its a mere copy of an all time classic.
