  • Extremely thought provoking

Pather Sesh Kothay rating: 7 out of 10(Aditya Chakrabarty wrote on 11 Mar 2012)

Comedians make us laugh, make us cry and entertain us.Thir main job is to bring a smile on our face. However the best part is that most comedians either nationally or internally have undergone extreme tragic conditions in their early part of life which is why they can potray pathos in the most befiiting manner simply because they have undergone such conditions.

Well, fortunately over here the filmmaker has not had to undergo such a thing in life as is the topic of the film. However as mentioned , comedians always manage to bring out the best of pathos and that has been proved with’ Pather Sesh Kothay’ which has been directed by Tanima Se, the noted comidienne.
The film is a thought provoking film and very realistic. It deals with the situations which many parents of mentally challenged children have to face on their own as well as in their interaction with other people of the society.

The difference here is that over here the protagonist Abhimanyu is not mentally challenged from birth, but becomes so due to a car accident during his childhood when his friend instigates him to drive a car though they are barely small kids and when he does so, he meets with an accident and becomes mentally challenged. The film then deals with with how the parents cope with the situation. They barely have any time or space for themselves or any privacy as their son is always ‘intruding’ into that space, but they know and accept the fact that this is their destiny and do everything possible to keep their son happy. The family remain very close knit and have their close moments togther with Abhimanyu as well. They just have one thought all the time-who will look after him after they are gone and Tota(their daughter) gets married?
The sister also has high hopes for her brother that one day he would recover and lead a normal life like anyone else. However she does hide one fact from her boyfriend that she has got a mentally challenged brother. The fact is out in the open when her boyfriend comes to their house to with his parents to speak about their marriage and the fact doesn’t seem to be hidden any more as the brother comes before them.Tragically, the brother expires that night due to a hear attack.
The film is a lesson for parents who have mentally challenged people. It shows them the way in which they should deal with their wards and how understanding and strong a person needs to be in that situation as that is the key point. That also involves the interaction with other people in the society. The family is also a lesson for friends and the term ‘friendship’ actually gets gradual imporatance because of the manner in which it has been elaborated.Abhi’s friend Anindya who had instigated Abhi which is why he had become what he is seems to have held himself responsible till the end along with his friend Chandra nd he had pledged to do something for peopel like Abhi and he had decided to sell his full collection of antique coins and build a home for people like AbhiIn the end he says’Aami Here Gelem Abhi’ when he comes to know of Abhi’s death.Every element of agony has been so well potrayed over here that it is actually shocking to know that it is a film made by none other than Tanima Sen.
The film is one of it’s kind not only because of the subject matter but of the acting.Every character potrays his role so beautifuly and naturally.Tanima and Krishnakishore come up with marvellous performances themselves. However the star of the show is Gaurav Chatterjee as Abhi.He is simply brilliant in his expressions, mannerisms and body movements and looks so natural. He has actually proved for the first time that the famous genes are there in his blood.Still thinking which genes one is talking about? Why, he is the grandson of our very own ‘Mahanayak’ Uttam Kumar. The songs are all Rabindra sangeets and interestingly a few of them have been sung by the actors themselves including Mrinal Mukherjee. There is a hint that Abhi’s life might have been brought to an end by other forces to end his misery.
Take a bow Tanima for your extremely commendable effort in creating awareness about such people and the same goes out to Gaurav as well for his stupendous performance.
