  • If you can digest the first Patiala peg ….

Patiala House rating: 6 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 11 Feb 2011)

Promos of forthcoming movies are very important now days. As gone those days when whatever the promos were, the music and word of mouth use to help the movie grow. Also that the cine lovers use to give a shot for some or another minor reason too. But now as we have loads of free entertainment in form of T.V, Reality Show, T-20, etc + the high killing rates of Multiplex and not to forget the abstract food prices, people have become choosy when it comes to movies. If the promo of any movie does not appeal them, they will wait for zillions of reviews; they will wait for their friend’s feedback and then maybe give a shot. But if the promos are appealing they won’t care for anyone and will rush to the nearest cinema houses, despite of bad reviews. We had some good examples last year, but when we come to speak about Patiala House promos they are bad or let’s say worse than many other films. The promos spell Looser with a big L and one does feel that they already know everything about the film after watching the film. But let me tell you my dear friends, you might be party correct, but then there is lots more than what shown in the promo’s. So let’s find out what more does the movie offer than the promos.

“Patiala house” is story of Sikh communities settled in south hall, England. One of which is family of Kahlon which is lead by Babuji {Rishi Kapoor}. Due to some terrible past where he had fought with the Britisher’s for the right of Indians out there, he started hating them. While doing this he also started dictating his terms over his wife {Dimple Kapadia} , His Son Gattu {Akshay Kumar} and other members of the family. Gattu wanted to become a pace bowler when he was young, but Babuji ruled out his decision and wanted gattu to live life as per his orders. Thus years later the next generation kids started to blame gattu for being a failure in life. Life gives Gattu another opportunity as one of the England cricket team selectors Mr.Bedi {Tinnu Anand} wants him to play for the country. He is joined by a family friend Simran {Anushka} who too feels gattu can achieve what he is best for. But will gattu do the much needed? Well that’s the entire movie all about.

Story has shades from ‘Bend It like Becham’, ‘I Proud to Be an Indian’ & ‘Dan Dana Dan Goal’. But with more Punjabi flavor added in it. Screenplay is very weak in the first half, and if you can go through this slow pace ride then the screenplay gets its pace correct in the second half. Yes it has some twist and spins to but ending to a predicted yet an interesting match. The whole past scenes of Rishi Kapoor vs. the Britisher’s are good and engrossing. Followed by Rishi irritating the cops, Akshyas Humiliation, Later all family members hiding things from Rishi Kapoor and the climax are the best part of the film. On the flip side the overdose of Anti Rishi Kapoor in the first half is terrible, Akshays monotonous scenes in the first half makes the film slow, Things working out very easily for Akshay and family, etc. Editing needed to be bit crisp in the first half and maybe in few scenes in second half too. Dialogs are nice, and go well with the film. Camera work is good, especially in the cricket match scenes.

Music is good, but not up to the mark when the makers are from Indians leading Music Company. Still Kyun mein jaagon, Tumba Tumba, Laung da nashkara are decent effort. Wish the movie had some good chartbuster songs.

Nikhil Advani had given a beautiful example of humor, tragedy and love in his debut effort – Kal Ho Na Ho. But later went down and down with his next two attempts {Salaam E Ishq & Chandni Chowk To China}. But don’t worry he does not degrade himself further more as when It comes to this film, he rises above his last two films for sure. He gets the emotions right in the second half with some good moments. Sadly he takes lots of time to deliver it; audience will need to hold their patience which is needed to watch a test cricket. He manages to do something different from the lead actors. I wonder why he skipped Indian team in the T-20 World cup.

Akshay Kumar has been attempting loads of comedy in his past films. But out here he is total different and silent. He hardly speaks in the first half, and even in the second half he is totally under control. Nice to see him in the role suiting his age. Rishi Kapoor is excellent as the head of the family. He dances, shouts, loves, gets angry, comical etc in the film. He has a role which is parallel to akshay kumar and we can say much better than the hero of the film. Anushka is sweet and is fine in her parts. Dimple was average. Tinnu Anand and other dozen family members were strictly average to below average. It was funny to see hard kaur in a bhajan mandal.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hai, promos se to bahut zyaada dum hai. The promos are very sad, slow and depressing. But in the movie it’s just in the first half, later the movie finds its pace and has some good interesting moments. Overall it’s not a bad watch and if you love cricket then you might have some good time. My last words over the movie are – it’s like a Patiala peg, if you can digest the first peg {or first half of the movie}, rest goes well smoothly.
