Balwant Rai (Sayeed Jaffrey) is a wealthy industrialist with two daughters Geeta (Poonam Dhillon), a classical singer, and Lata (Sridevi) a classical dancer. Geeta loses to Lata in a competition and ends her life by jumping off a cliff. This incident leaves Lata mentally disbalanced. Arjun (Vinod Khanna) is a worker in Rai's factory. Rai is impressed with Arjun's honesty and bravery and offers him a place in his house. Arjun manages to diagnose Lata's mental problem and Rai gets the couple married.

Karan (Jackie Shroff), a police inspector is heart-broken by this marriage as he had loved Lata since childhood. But he and Arjun are good friends. The real story is that Arjun is the brother of that girl who was killed after being hit by Geeta's car when she was on her way to the cliff. Arjun had vowed to avenge his sister's death by killing Lata. He is helped by Dr Prashant (Om Shivpuri) and together they conspire and hatch a plan to kill her. According to the plan, Arjun pushes Lata off the same cliff, but she is saved by the fisherfolk. So Arjun and Dr. Prashant design their last plan. Karan gets a whiff of this plan. Finally, Arjun is swept off his feet by Lata's love for him and realises his folly. Together he and Karan try to thwart Dr Prashant's evil plans. Will they succeed? Will Lata be saved?
