Romapada gupta, better known as Roma gupta, is a jobless young man whose only dream is to become a famous author. His friend, Joy tries to get him a job as a radio mechanic but Roma's carelessness costs him the job in no time. A good natured soul, Roma is also a friend of children who he teaches through songs. Joy forces Roma to apply for the post of personal assistant in a company that employs only women candidates. The managing director, Rubali Sen, is duped by Roma’s effiminate name and calls him for an interview. Roma gets the job for his efficiency and agrees to a five year contract in which time period he can’t leave the job without paying back the salary drawn. Roma, the only male in office, is ragged by his colleagues. Rubali moves him to her chamber to maintain office discipline. Meanwhile, Joy visits Uma prasanna ?is interested only in well known authors. Joy tricks him to believe that the poems have been written by his sister, Minati, who has a great regard for Umaprasanna’s paper. Joy hints at marriage at near future and the greedy Umaprasanna starts publishing Roma’s works. Roma wins Rubali’s regard through his efficient work. He also begins to give piano lessons to Medini Debi, an elite social worker, by working on the keys of the typewriter. His poems, under Minati’s name, are widely appreciated. Joy promises a meeting of Minati with Umaprasanna once he publishes Roma’s first novel. Medini debi fails to learn playing the piano and persuades Roma to play for her in a function from behind the curtain, while she gives a false show to the audience. Roma agrees to do this in return of money for he had decided to leave the job as a result of an argument with Rubali., Medini debi’s function turns out to be a fiasco as Roma messes everything on being discovered by Rubali. The ashamed Roma doesn’t go to office anymore. A chance meeting with Umaprasanna leads Joy and Roma to fabricate Minati’s death. Roma’s first novel had been published and Umaprasanna had organized a felicitation ceremony in Minati’s honour, which turns into a memorial ceremony. Joy reveals the true identity of Mminati in the function. Rubali, who had gone to the function to find Roma, also hears that Roma on seeing Rubali, tries to run away but is ultimately discovered by her and the two are reconciliated to each other.
