This is the story of a family living in the slums of Mumbai who have a hand to mouth existence. A cycle rickshaw driver and his wife(Sulabha Deshpande) have seven children. The most important thing for survival is food and Janaki (Rickshaw driver's daughter) to satisfy the hunger of her family sacrifices herself to a truck driver Purushottam Singh (Raj Babbar) When she realises he is already married and has a son she walks out of his life. Her mother goes into a state of shock when she known that Janaki sleeps with Purushottam for a plate of chicken Biryani and commits suicide. Janaki is asked for his name but she refuses to tell and decides to give birth to his child. The story reveals how women in lower societies can easily be trapped by men in the upper level of society. It also shows that some people living in slums have to struggle for a single good meal in a day.
