Phas Gaye Re Obama rating: 7 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 02 Dec 2010)

In the days of NFDC, Doordarshan and Films division; there were movie made with tele actors or stage actors but the script use to be something different or experimental. With the rise of Multiplex era we got to witness loads of such different theme based films or a simple film hitting the silver screen where the star power was not less but totally missing. Few made some impact but many struggled for even getting minimum audience for screening. Director Subhash Kapoor's brings us “Phas Gaye Re Obama”; let’s find out what lies beneath it.

“Phas Gaye Re Obama” is story of Om Shastri {Rajat Kapoor} a NRI who is facing the recession heat in U.S. He has to pay his loans and debts thus he decides to come to India and sell off his traditional property. But when he arrives he feels the same recession heat out there too and thus fails to collect money. Meanwhile Bhaisaab {Sanjay Mishra} along with his team decides to kidnap Om, so they can ask for a decent ransom and lead a great life. Bhaisaab and his main guy Ani {Manu Rishi} kidnaps Om, only to find out that he is broke. Om gives them an idea, by which he and even Bhaisaab will also make good amount of money. This leads Om and Ani to various different levels full of surprises.

Story is simple but has good twist and turns. Sadly the twist and turns start looking bit monotonous in the second half leading to a predictable climax. Screenplay has some good moments especially in the first half. All the scenes between Rajat, Manu and Sanjay Mishra are superb. Watch out for the English Speaking class scene or the scene where Rajat meets Sanjay Mishra for first time. Sadly the same cannot be said about Neha Dhupia and others scenes. Dialogs are witty and intelligent. Camera work is nice and captures the mood of the film. Background music is kind of average.

Subhash Kapoor gives us a nice and simple film with some good twist. The whole conning by one team to another is superb but starts looking similar till the time they reach Neha Dhupia or Amol Gupte. Even the Amol Gupte angle was quite easily handled; one did expect some twist or dramatic moments out there in the climax part. Still good amount of marks to the director for the different theme, witty dialogs and interesting narration.

Rajat Kapoor slips easily in the role of NRI and does a great job. He is brilliantly supported by Manu Rishi who is total star of the film with his style, mannerisms, accent etc. Sanjay Mishra has been excelling in his performance after every film and out here too he does his part perfectly. Neha Dhupia was bad and unwanted in the film; her track should have been totally chopped off. Amol Gupte was nice, but could not repeat the Kaminay performance.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hai accha dum hai, with some good intelligent humor and interesting script. It’s only the some repetitive scenes which hamper the graph of film. but for people who like simple, light hearted film this is perfect film for you as the film had good amount of Jaal {Traps} for its viewers to fall for.
