"Bhagoo RGV aaya..."
Whenever we talk of Indian Horror Films two names comes in our mind, Ramsay brothers and Ram Gopal Varma. The former known for B-Grade Stuff and later known for making Horror movies with A grade actors. But in horror there are many tracks, like in case of this movie its Black Magic. We have seen hardly movies based on this theme, like Padmini Kholapure's "Gehrayee" and Victor Banerjee's "Ho Sakta Hai". We can find many references from these movies in "Phoonk", a so called first Indian movie based on Black Magic [As said by makers].
"Phoonk" is story of Rajiv [Sudeep] and his family consisting of a old mother, Wife and Two Children s. Rajiv loves his work and does not believe in superstition. He creates a rivalry with his business colleagues, who knows black magic and uses it to teach a lesson to Rajiv. Rajiv loves his Daughter Raksha [Ahsaas Channa],Thus the Black Magic is done on her. She starts getting Possessed by it, which neither doctor's [K.K.Raina & Lilette Dubey] are able to understand. Rajiv seeks help of Manjha [Zakir Hussain] to get hold of his daughter from the evil clutches of Black Magic.
Music is not required in such movies and we have two background songs, this does not work in favor of the movie. Background score is good and helps creating the mood of the film.
Story is simple and weak. So is the screenplay, there are scenes thrown on purpose to create scare. Many scenes have been inspired by "Gehrayee". Dialogs are strictly OK except the
Climax dialog which many might like. Cinematographer is highly obsessed with RGV movies and has overdone the RGV camera effects of Close ups, Too much of moving, Out of focus angles, etc. Many might find it quite irritating at places. Special effects in few scenes were quite funny.
Ram Gopal Varma tried this year everything he was best in. Political movies, Gangster Based Movies and now Horror. But his earlier works were much much better than his recent work,
For first time this movie has been promoted in big way, which works in favor of this movie. but one wish the contents was also as good as the Promotion. He tried to create some scary moments by using close up of toys, artifacts and other props in the house but fails miserably. Again at times they look monotonous and irritating. There were few Dream Scenes shown to again create some scare, one is good and another is funny. Over all except one or two minor "jatkas", there is no need to scare in this movie.
On performance basis, the movie hardly has anything to offer except Ahsaas Channa. She has done a great job and has done justice to her role. New comer Sudeep has hang over of Javed jaffery and over acts in many scenes. Amruta also fails to impress and ends up overacting in the second half. Zakir hussain and others are OK and wasted. If only the lead star cast was bit proper the movie would had been still better.
So bol meri "Filmi Khopdi" is film mein kitna hain dum ??
Kutch Khaas Dum nahin hain. Despite the hype, publicity the movie is quite weak and ends up giving just minor scary moments.RGV seriously need to pull up his socks as he is loosing them and If this continues then whenever we will see his movie one will say ..."bhagooo...RGV aaya".
