Players rating: 6 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 06 Jan 2012)

With almost 100 years of background, our filmmakers have been shamelessly coping films from Hollywood and various other sources. Few got inspired by those films and gave their unique touch, but rest made frame to frame clones. ‘It happened one night’, ‘The magnificent seven’, ‘Rambo’, ‘Something about Mary’, ‘Fatal Attraction’, ‘Hitch’ and many many more films are perfect example of the film cloning in our Hindi Cinema. Thanks to the globalizations, some film makers started the official adaptation or remakes of these foreign cinemas, giving a proper due to the hard work of the original films. Two years back we had ‘We are family’ from the house of Karan Johar which was official adaptation of Hollywood hit ‘Stepmom’ and this year Ace due directors Abbas Mustan brings us official adaptation of the classic ‘The Italian Job’. Abbas Mustan’s films use to have huge hangover of Hollywood thrillers in past and thus they were perfect directors for this job. So let’s find out if this official adaptation works with the audience or we just love the unofficial versions in our films.

“Players” is story of Charlie Mascarenhas (Abhishek Bachchan) a con artist cum chartered accountant who comes to know about a transfer of 10000 crores gold from Russia to Romania. He seeks help of his mentor Victor Dada (Vinod Khanna) to form a team of players for this robbery. Victor Dada introduces Charlie to Rhea (Bipasha Basu) an automobile expert, Ronnie (Bobby Deol) the magician, Bilal Basheer (Sikander Kher) an explosives expert and Sunny Mehra (Omi Vaidya) a makeup artist. Their team is incomplete without a professional hacker Spider (Neil Nitin Mukesh) as it’s impossible to trace him. Charlie with help of Victor’s daughter Naina (Sonam Kapoor) traces Spider and after convinces him to be the part of the team. Together they leave for Russia and execute the robbery. They achieve their target but things do not go as planned. What happens next is what the entire film about.

Story has basic plot line from the Original classic ‘The Italian Job’, but with quite amount of changes. The screenplay is like a hill ride full of ups and downs. There are times where you get totally indulged in the film and at times one wonder what you are doing in this film which questions your I.Q levels. Still the whole Robbery scenes, Interval Part, Abhishek –Omi in gold deal, Johnny Lever introducing his family and workshop scene, Car chase towards the anti climax followed by some good twist and turns are the best moments of the film. On the flip side the films works on snail pace at many point followed by some predictable stuffs and some unnecessary scenes which keeps dragging in the film which making it even longer. The moment actions scenes are done, the writing part fails to grab your attention at most of the places. Camera work is good and gives you the feel of an international film along with some remindence of Dhoom, Cash and few other films. Editing is highly required in the film as at many points the length act as a negative point.

Music is one of the biggest negative points of this film. All the songs are below average and weak, none of them can be remembered or reheard. Absence of a chartbuster song in such film might affect the mass audience of this film.

Abaas Mustan from their first hit ‘Khiladi’ have been making thrillers in our Hindi films and achieved a mastership in it. Their last film ‘Race’ has lots of twist and turns with some fantastic music and great promotion. Sadly out here they are highly weakened on the music part followed by the low publicity of the film. The only factor which works in favor of them is their craftsmanship and experience, thanks to which the movie survives as a decent one time watch. Some of the twists were quite predictable and typical abbas mustan style but then there were few which add to their style. By doing an official remake they did try to match to certain extent on the technical aspect of the film, but failed on the writing part.

Abhishek Bachchan has done plenty of films with conning / robbery as its main theme and out here he manages to do a decent job, though the charm of his last film ‘Dum Maro Dum’ is missing. Neil Nitin Mukesh shines in the film and proves that he is perfect choice for such given roles. Sonam Kapoor fails to grow even after so many flops and bad performances. Bobby Deol is wasted. Bipasha Basu looks great and does her part with full conviction. Omi Vaidya and Johnny Lever give good comic relief. Sikander Kher is fine. Vinod Khanna looked pale and weak.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai aur nahin bhi hai. The film works in parts {with the actions scenes, planning/plotting scenes etc} and fails in parts {Romantic track, few unnecessary scenes and the length} followed by the weak music and bad promotion of the film. The comparison with the original is unavoidable, but kudos for giving the credits to the original work. In my case I went with zero expectations {thanks to the bad promotion} and must say that it was not a bad game, but missed out at some point.
