Promod Gangopadhay was born in the year 1910 in Kolkata. His father was sri Prakash Gangopadhay. Promod Gangopadhay passed law in the year 1931.
Promod Gangpadhay was first recognised when the members of the Adarsha Chitra Limited (Bombay) had come to Kolkata in search of a new face. They wanted to take Promod Gangopadhay to Bombay but Promd Gangopadhay declined. Finally by the request of the head of the committee he went to Bombay in 1935 and singed Hireb Basu’s film ‘Piya ki jogan’. In bengali he singed his first film called Amar Geeti of the same director which was released in the year 1940. Director Promothesh Barua wanted to cast Promod Gangopadhay in his film ‘Shapmukti’ but unfortunately the dates were crashing. Promotesh Barua again offered him to act in his film Matrisneha. But again Promod had some problem with the producer. Over all the film did not release. Then Promothesh decided to re-shoot the film Nishir Daak into the talkis film, casting Promod Gangopadhay as a lead actor. But due to his untimely death, the project did not work out. Promod Gangopadhay was also interested in doing theatres and was also involved with Radio too. He continued acting in the Satyajit Ray films and also in Mrinal Sen, Gautam Ghosh even when he was quite old. Pramod Gangopadhay died on 16th July 1992.
