Pratidwandi directed by Anup Sengupta is a complete political masala film with all the other factors which are essential to make it complete like romance, action, thrill, one liners, drama and what have you. In this film the central character is Iqbal and Dibyendu/Akash played by Rahul but essentially it is Iqbal played by Ranjit Mullick who is the central character and who holds the film together.Iqbal is completely alone, a do gooder of society who just can not see any injustice being done in the society and so he emerges as the father figure of Debu’s village as well as that of the film. This is a role which we have Ranjit Mullick or for that matter even Mithunda enact several times so this is nothing new for us and in fact both these play such characters quite well.Over here it was expected that Ranjit Mullick would overshadow Rahul and that’s what he does. The story is a little interesting.
Dibyendu (Debu) stays in the village with his parents and his father is a school teacher. His guru is Iqbal Khan, a person who has no one in this world but dotes on Debu and is a do gooder of society.Debu has big dreams of becoming an actor so he decides to go to Kolkata to try his luck where Iqbal also accompanies him. Through Iqbal’s contact when they go to see the shooting of a film one day, a chance by luck simply drops into Debu‘s hands where he impresses and is chosen as the hero for the director’s next film. In due course of time he becomes one of the biggest stars and becomes rich. He is also known as Akash nowadays. His parents come to stay with him and he is married to his sweetheart Sharmila. But his character changes. When his guruji seeks his cooperation in staging a street play where he need to act in order to make the people more aware of the injustice that has been done to a young girl by the Panchayat Pradhan’s son, he declines. He insults his guruji who goes away. His parents also go away to their village. His relationship with his wife is also strained. He goes to a party one day when one of his fans, Sohini approaches him. Later on at the same party outside the room when they are speaking to each other, both of them witness a murder where Sohini’s younger sister is shot by the Home Minister’s son because she had refused to give in to his advances. Later on Akash lies in front of the Commissioner that he had seen no murder taking place. However this incident keeps on haunting him and he decides to tell the truth to the cops. Meanwhile Shankar Ghoshal threatens to harm Sohini’s mother and younger sister as a result of which she gives false evidence in court and the accused are let off. When Akash and Iqbal come to know the truth, they decide to teach Shankar Ghoshal a lesson.Iqbal decides to organize a street play to make the people aware of the real identity of Shankar Ghoshal where Akash also decides to act as he is a changed man now and everything is normal now as his parents are back with him and the relationship between his wife and him is normal.Shankar Ghoshal and his men arrive at the place and disrupt proceedings. There is an altercation between the people and Shankar Ghoshal and his men whereby he and his men are arrested later on by the Commissioner who arrives there with his men.
Rahul and Priyanka are okay , but without Ranjit Mullick the film would not have been made.Priyanka is in fact better than Rahul. The song are nothing to speak about.Rajatava Dutta as usual plays the villain as he usually does in most commercial films and he does an excellent job as usual. But then he usually does not disappoint.Deepankar Dey plays the Commissioner for a change instead of an evil man and does well. The action sequences are not great at all , in fact a few of them could have done without what has been done with them.Pia Sengupta as Sohini is not bad.Akash is shown to stay in a masssive mansion after he achieves success. That mansion would even put the residences of some Bollywood actors to shame.
