Those who are very knowledgeable, they say “Prem Aamar”, the latest of Raj Chakraborty, is a very well copied film from a south Indian movie. Even his two earlier films were also “ditto copy” from successful south Indian films. I don’t know all these facts. Whether it’s a copy or not, “Prem Aamar” is a very watchable film, I cay say. I can’t remember before how many days I have seen people buying tickets for a Bengali movie from blackers paying 200% more the value.
“Prem Aamar” is the love story of Rabi (Soham) and Riya (Payel). The backdrop of the story is Siliguri Railway colony. RIya is an Engineering student, but Rabi could not pass the school leaving exam even after four years. Rabi spends time with his friends playing and wooing school and college girls.
Riya’s father (Biswajit Chakraborty) is a paralytic person after a massive heart attack. Her mother (Laboni Sarkar) allows a local businessman Rajiv (Suman Mukherjee) to mix him with her daughter as he helps the family is distress. Rajiv also takes chances of enjoying the company of a young girl. Riya also accepts her fate of marrying Rajiv, but everything changes after Rabi comes into the picture. Rabi falls in love with Riya. It is a one side love.
The film revolves around the story how Riya also falls in love with Rabi. In this slightly over 2hrs film, RIya expresses her love in the 1.5 hrs. Till then the story line was flat. But inspite of the flat story line, it keeps the audience tight only because of intelligent story-telling technique and well designed sequences. Even the rain drenched action sequence in the busy Siliguri street is so well conceived, that we barely remembers, it also had no bearing in the next sequences.
The last half an hour is a very stiff climbing up to the climax of the story line. Riya and family were shifted to a different place as Riya’s mother gets a hint that her daughter is in love with Rabi, which might off-balance their financial status. She requests Rajiv for an early marriage.
But one night Riya leaves her house and takes shelter in a guest house with Rabi. They spend the night there. They become physically close that night.
The next morning Riya while coming back to her home she ran over by a truck and died. Rabi tried to save her, but he was also severely injured.
Raj Chakraborty is a very sincere director. He might think the enf of the film in a slightly different way. The soul of Riya consoling Rabi – is a very different end to digest.
Soham and his group of friends have make the film watchable. Jeet Ganguli’s music is quite good and peppy.
