The film centre around refugee/ emmigrant problems. It states the story of Shyam who had been brought up in a Mislim household as Akram. Later he comes to know that he was a Hindu whose parentrs had scattered during the partition riots. Lodged with a new identity Shyam comes to Kolkata in search of his cousins. Unable to trace them he lands up in a mess where he befriends an inmate of the mess Pranda. Pran da teaches him Bengali and trains him as a professional singer. He gets a job in a hotel as a singer where he meets Meena. Meena was the main performer of the hotel and was being exploited by the hotel owner who decieved her in the name of marriage. Shyam falls in love with Meena and rescued her from her desperate situation. He wants to get married to her. Meena is unwilling as she feels that she was unchaste and her mother had been a courtesan. She runs away on the day of their marriage. Shyam while pursuing her meets with an accident and loses his eyesight. The car belonged to Radha, Meena's twin sisiter. Shyam is taken to Puri where Radha's foster father was an eye specialist. Shyam takes Radha to be Meena. Radha also feels attracted to Shyam but does not divulge her identity. Pran da and Meena's mother reach Puri. Meena was also there in Puri.Pran's religious teacher turns out to be the father of Meena and Radha.They had been seperated during the paritition. The mother had sent her twin daughters to an orphanage and later had been able to retrieve Meena while the other child had been taken away for adoption. Radha's true identity is revealed. But before Meena meets them, she drowns herself in the sea. Shyam searches frantically for her. But to no avail. Shyam and Radha unite in the end.
