A love story that transcends romance. A story of the clash between traditions, customs, prejudices and liberal human values. Set in post independent India of the early 50's when the Rajas, the Zamindars and the Thakurs still held way over the common people in large parts of the country. Deodhar (Rishi Kapoor), an orphan and nephew of the village priest, has tutored Manorama (Padmini Kolhapure), the Thakur's only daughter. He also loves her. But Manorama is not aware of his feelings and gets married to Thakur Narendra Pratap Singh (Vijayendra Ghatge) of Kunwara. Deodhar goes to the city for continuing higher studies and upon his return finds Manorama a widow having to put up with indignities and harassments. Not being able to keep silent, he wants to revive Manorama's faith in love and life. But can a poor young man take on the mighty Thakurs? Is love a melody or a matter of faith and justice? Watch this extraordinary Raj Kapoor film and discover the meaning of true love.
