There is a similarity between Streetlight, the first film produced by Purple Motion Pictures and Premer Kathakoli where they are presenting the film instead of producing it. The stories of both films are based on adult themes. If the first film was about a man who is caught between his ambitious wife and his lover, a high class call girl but one day when he returns to find his wife back, he goes back to her and ends his relationship with his girlfriend. Later on the two women meet and there is a turnaround of events at the end.
In this film, it is also a story of a man torn between two women Koli and Katha. It is a story of a younger man Prem falling for an older woman Katha and then a passionate affair takes place between them. Hell breaks loose when the man Prem falls in love with a young girl Katha who turns out to be Koli’s step daughter! Koli. She is very happy when Katha’s relationship breaks off with Prem as Katha comes to know the truth and starts hating him. She readily agrees to marry someone else.Prem’s sister-in-law tries to set things right by speaking to Koli. There is also an upmanship between Kamalesh and Koli at the end as Kamalesh fixes Koli’s engagement with Katha without informing her, but it seems that she had done the same thing as well without informing him! In the end, it turns out to be a tragedy as Koli ends up losing her life as she had been poisoned by Kamalesh as he wanted her out of Katha’s life.
The difference between the two films is in the execution, treatment and acting abilities. The acting in Street Light was much better than in this film. When you have an actor like Dron playing the part of the younger man who is not too much of an actor, it doesn’t say much.Arjun Chakrabarty also fails to impress and he was much better in Street Light.Nivedita who played the part of the other woman in Street Light has a bit part in this film and is wasted. The story sometimes is confusing. The character of Prem it seems has no work though he is an engineer. In fact he is a ‘Premer Engineer’. The costumes are horrendous especially when Prem and Koli are shown to make love. She is shown to be wearing something made out of ‘tiger skin’. My God! The story also seems to be set in Digha as the two lead characters seem to be wandering about on the beach all the time and even the songs take place there.A couple of songs though are nice.
Such subject matters are not easy to hand and that is why the film falls flat because of extreme poor execution and wrong choice of actors. The extreme turnaround of events with the high drama adding to it makes things worse.
