Pritam Chakraborty, fondly known as Pritam, was born in Kolkata. He is the son of Prabodh Chakraborty, who runs a music school for children. Pritam initially gained training in music from his father, and also learned to play the guitar while he was in school. He attended St. James' School, after which he completed his education in Presidency College. He formed a band with his college batchmates, called "Jotugriher Pakhi". Pritam later joined Bangla band, “Chandrabindoo”. In January 1993, Pritam joined the Film and Television Institute in Pune to undertake a course in sound recording and sound engineering. He was soon offered a chance to compose background music for a film by Hungarian filmmaker Istvan Gaal. He also learnt African music from musicologist Kedar Avati. Pritam later moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in Bollywood. He began composing ad jingles, and became friendly with a number of talented men who were trying to make it big in Bollywood, like Shantanu Moitra, Rajkumar Hirani, Sanjay Gadhvi and Chandrajeet Ganguly, also known as Jeet, who played the guitar with Anup Jalota.

Gadhvi was signed on to direct Tere Liye (2000) and he, in turn, signed on his friends Jeet and Pritam as music composers. The music did create a buzz, but the film flopped. In 2002, Yashraj signed Gadhvi up to direct Mere Yaar ki Shaadi Hai, for which the Jeet-Pritam duo once again composed the music. All the songs from that movie were chartbusters, viz. ‘Resham si hain yeh…’, ‘Sharara sharara…’, ‘Humne suna hai…’ and others, including the title track. The movie did average business. In 2003, the duo went on to score the music for Stumped and Raghu Romeo, both of which flopped. Pritam's career as a solo musician started with Fun2shh - Dudes In The 10th Century (2003). The movie was a failure, and so was its music. In 2004, Pritam composed the music for Sanjay Gadhvi's next film Dhoom, which was a huge hit. The music topped the charts. The song ‘Dhoom Machale…’, sung in Hindi by Sunidhi Chauhan and in English by Tata Young, created waves amongst the youngsters. Pritam did 3 films in 2005, all of whose tracks were chartbusters. ‘Halka halka…’ and ‘Jhuki jhuki…’ from Chocolate were big hits. ‘Ada…’, ‘Chori chori…’ and ‘Kiss me baby…’ from Garam Masala became hugely popular. Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena had some immensely popular tracks as well, viz. ‘Saara jahan kahe ishq hai jhootha…’, ‘Ankhiyan na maar…’ and ‘Jal jal ke dhuan…’. With all the success flowing in, Pritam became one of the hottest musicians in the industry.

Pritam had many hits in 2006 as he did several films. His popular tracks include: ‘Dil mein baji guitar…’ and ‘Jai jai money…’ from Apna Sapna Money Money; ‘Yeh Khuda…’ and ‘Bolo na tum zara…’ from Fight Club: Members Only; ‘Ek pal ke liye…’ from Ankahee; ‘Tere bin…’ and ‘Hai ishq yeh kya…’ from Bas Ek Pal; ‘You and I, lets do balle balle…’ from Naksha; ‘Pyar karke pachtaya…’ and ‘Dil tod ke na ja…’ from Pyaar Ke Side Effects. The same year, he made his landmark compositions ‘Tu hi meri shab hai…’ and ‘Ya Ali…’ from Gangster (2006). He followed it up with the successful tracks ‘Kya mujhe pyar hai…’ and ‘Chal chale apne ghar…’ from Woh Lamhe (2006). He also composed the hugely popular tracks in Dhoom:2 (2006) like ‘Crazy kiya re…’, ‘Dhoom again…’ and ‘Dil laga na…’. He completed the year with another hit album Bhagam Bhag (2006) which comprised of songs like ‘Tere bin…’ and ‘Pyar ka signal…’. In 2007, his first music release was for Nehlle Pe Dehlla which was a flop. Just Married had a couple of popular tracks like ‘Jaagte raho…’ and ‘Ram milaye jodi…’., while Hattrick went by unnoticed. Kya Love Story Hai (2007) had two very popular tracks viz. ‘Its rocking…’ and ‘Miss you everyday…’. Pritam then composed the music for the film Life In A… Metro (2007) which was a big success. The album comprised of tracks like ‘In dino dil mera…’ and ‘Alvida alvida…’ Raqeeb (2007) had one popular tack, ‘Jaane kaise shab dhali…’. Awarapan (2007) had music which was widely appreciated. Songs like ‘To phir aao mujhko sataao…’, ‘Tera mera rishta purana…’ and ‘Mahiya…’ became huge hits. ‘Ek din teri raahon mein…’ from Naqaab: Disguised Intentions (2007) was a big hit as well. Darling (2007) and Dhol (2007) had some average tracks. Pritam scored one of the best songs of the year with ‘Hare Ram Hare Krishna…’ from Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007). The song became a huge rage. The film had other memorable tracks like ‘Labon ko…’ , ‘Allah hafiz…’, and the haunting ‘Mere dholna…’. Jab We Met (2007) also had music composed by Pritam, which was one of the best albums of the year. It had a wide range of music from soft to peppy to bhangra numbers. ‘Tum se hi…’, ‘Mauja hi mauja…’, ‘Yeh ishq haaye…’ and ‘Nagada nagada…’ were runaway hits. Pritam also scored the music for Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal (2007), Dus Kahaniyaan (2007) which slowly became popular. His other releases included the recent My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves (2008) and Bombay To Bangkok (2008). Pritam's recent releases, Race, Jannat and Singh is Kinng did climb up the charts and were all winners.

Pritam has scored the music for few forthcoming films like Fauj Mein Mauj (2008), Har Pal and Kidnap. Pritam has been the recipient of GIFA, Zee Sangeet Awards, Sahara Sangeet Awards, Stardust and the MTV IMMIES. Pritam’s hit songs are known to be blatantly copied from musicians around the world. Several of Pritam's hit compositions are said to have been inspired from Turkish singer Tarkan's songs. Pritam has been one of the judges in the musical show “Chhotte Ustaad”.
