Priyanka Ashok Chopra was born on 18th July 1982, in Jamshedpur. She is the daughter of Capt. Dr. Ashok Chopra and Dr. Madhu Chopra. Her dad is Punjabi-speaking, while her mom is from Bihar. As a child, she suffered from Asthma and was very close to her dad. Her family affectionately called her Mimi. She started her education at La Martinière Girls College in Lucknow as a resident student. She also studied at Maria Goretti College in Bareilly for a short while, which helped her in preparing for further studies in the USA. She studied in Newton's Newton North High School in Massachusetts, and then in Cedar Rapid's John F. Kennedy High School in Iowa. She completed tenth grade and then decided to become a Software Engineer or a Criminal Psychologist. In 2000, Priyanka returned to India and attended Jai Hind College and Basant Singh Institute of Science in Churchgate, Bombay, but had to leave abruptly as she was crowned Miss India. In the same year, she was crowned Miss World.
Priyanka first appeared on the silver screen in India in a Tamil movie Thamizhan (2002). She made her debut in Bollywood with The Hero: Love Story Of A Spy in 2003, co-starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. She won a lot of appreciation. Though the movie was declared below average, it was one of the highest grossers that year. Andaaz (2003) was Priyanka’s next film, starring opposite Akshay Kumar. The movie became a hit. After that, she did a few films like Plan (2004), Kismat (2004) and Asambhav (2004), all of which failed at the box-office. The same year, she had a couple of other releases viz. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), co-starring Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan, and Aitraaz (2004) co-starring Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. Both were mediocre hits, but critically acclaimed. She even won an award for Aitraaz. This strengthened her position in the industry. In 2005, Priyanka had 6 releases. Barsaat, Waqt: The Race Against Time, and Bluffmaster! were average to above average, while Yakeen, Karam and Blackmail flopped. Priyanka then appeared in Taxi No.9211 (2006), starring Nana Patekar and John Abraham, and in 36 China Town (2006), starring Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor. Both films were above average. Starring in two of the most successful films that year, viz. Krrish (2006) alongside Hrithik Roshan, and Don - The Chase Begins Again (2006) alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka’s career was soaring high. Unfortunately her other release Aap Ki Khatir (2006), co-starring Akshaye Khanna, flopped. A lot was expected from the multi-starrer Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love (2007), directed by Nikhil Advani, but the movie failed to do well at the box office. Priyanka’s most recent release, Big Brother (2007) also met with a cold response. Priyanka is now involved in the filming of Fashion (2008), God Tussi Great Ho (2008), Kajri (2008), Drona (2008), Qurbani (2008), Love Story 2050 (2008), and London Dreams (2009). She will also appear in Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam and Chamki Chameli.
Priyanka enjoys Indian music and dance, and has a flair for writing poetry and short stories. She loves reading, especially biographies.She has worked for a lot of social-welfare programs. She is a complete movie buff. She is fondly called Sunshine, Mimi, Yanka and Priyucka Cobra. She was the Winner of the Miss India and Miss World beauty pageants in 2000. She became the fifth Indian woman to win the title, and the fourth Indian woman to win in a span of seven years Her father Ashok Chopra, who also manages her career, was diagnosed with a tumor in his liver. He had to undergo a complicated emergency surgery. Priyanka also has a younger brother, Siddharth. In 2004, she participated in a world tour aptly titled Temptations 2004 with Bollywood's leading stars viz. Shahrukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji and Arjun Rampal. ? Priyanka was listed No.2 of 'Top Bollywood Actresses' of 2006. ? She was listed No.1 by UK magazine Eastern Eye one of "Asia's Sexiest Women" (Sept/2006). ? She appeared on the cover of the premiere issue of Maxim magazine, Indian version, released in 2006. ? While shooting the song ‘Do me a favour, let's play holi…’ in the movie Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005), she stepped on a live wire and received a shock. She was hospitalized for a day. ? She turned down the lead in Umrao Jaan (2006) to work in Bluffmaster! (2005). ? She turned down a part in London Dreams (2009) because she could not provide the shooting dates as she was busy with other films. Some of her achievements include: ? Priyanka is the only Indian in the USA to have been selected at the state level for the National Opus Honor Choir. ? She did a lot of charity work back in India and the USA. ? She joined the CAF and CII in their literacy program and is their ambassador. ? She is a member of the support group for the Thalassemic children in U.P., India. ? Priyanka also participated in the adult education awareness program with the non-governmental organizations in Bareilly. ? She joined the Indian Government-sponsored Polio Eradication Program as a volunteer. ? She also raised funds for the destitute in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, by participating in a church program. Priyanka did a few Brand endorsements as well for companies/products like: TAGHeuer, Lux, Pepsi, J Hampstead, Kinetic Scooty, Sunsilk.
