Dr. Kumar (Ashok kumar) is a very successful medical practitioner. However, he gives more importance to money and does not ever help poor patients. His son Anand (Vinod mehra) finishes his medical studies with flying clolours and is all set to start his own practice. While his own clinic is being readied, Dr. Kumar asks Anand to go and meet his old friend Dr. Rahman (Shashi Kapoor). Dr. Rahman stays in a village and helps the poor patients. He has develped a miracle cure for asthma. Dr. Kumar's idea behind sending Anand to Dr. Rahman was to get this miracle cure formula. When Anand arrives, the villagers mistake him to be the new doctor for the village hospital and welcome him with open arms. Despite his best efforts, Anand is unable to disclose the reality. He even tries to run away from the village, but Rahman's deteriorating health makes him stay back. Gradually, he starts helping Dr. Rahman in the village hospital. Soon after, the village is abuzz with news of Soni's (Rekha) arrival. Anand is informed that Soni is a prostitute who goes to the city every month and returns with a lot of cash. While the entire village hates Soni, she shares a warm, father-daughter relationship with Dr. Rahman. Soni starts liking Anand and tries unsuccessfully to woo him using various tactics. However, Dr. Kumar comes to the village and takes Anand back to the city. Soni follows Kumar to the city and proclaims her love for him. Anand is angry at her and drives down to the village to drop her back. On the way, he tries to help an accident victim (husband of Rani Sahiba, Padmini Devi, played by Moon - Moon Sen). The victim dies and Rani Sahiba sues Anand for murder. Dr. Rahman manages to get Anand out of this mess by convincing Rani Sahiba of Anand's noble intentions. The events makes Anand decide to stay, in the village and help Dr.rahman. Soon after, Dr. Rahman tells Anand, Soni's sad story and how she was abducted by dacoits on her wedding day. Despite not having been molested, her would be husband Dharma (Punit Issar) had refused to accept her. After Dharma failed to molest Soni, he got her labelled as a 'loose women' in front of the villagers. After Soni failed to get rid of this 'bad name,' she realized that the tag of a prostitute helped her avoid the advances of many men, including the jaagirdar (Bharat Kapoor). Anand accepts Soni's love and decides to marry her. Dr. Rahman meanwhile discovers that Anand has a brain tumor, which would take Rs.1 lakh to be operated upon. Anand refuses to approach his father for help and says he would prefer to die instead. He even tries to distance Soni from himself by abusing her. However, Soni learns of the truth through Dr.rahman. She sells herself to the jaagirdar to arrange money for anand's operation. When Dr. Rahman learns about this through Natthulal (jagdeep) he goes to Jaagirdar's place to stop Soni. Anand and Dr. Kumar also reach the venue and rescue Soni. Anand soon gets operated upon and Dr. Kumar also accepts his relationship with Soni.
