“Ek ‘Race’ Abaas Mustan ke naam”..
A true Sport man never gives up Despite of being out of form. He keeps trying hard and hard to perform and reach the level they had achieved earlier. Sometimes he fails, sometimes they succeed and sometimes they show the spark that yes, i am still in the game. That’s what exactly the Director duo “Abbas Mustan” are trying to say with their latest movie “Race”.
‘Race’ is a story of Ranvir [Saif Ali Khan], who lives with his step brother Rajiv [Akshay Khanna]. They own a stud farm in Durban, South Africa. Besides breeding of horses, Ranvir is obsessed with horse racing. Same way Rajiv is obsessed with alcohol. Ranvir does not like to lose and Rajiv loves to booze.
Ranvir likes Sonia [Bipasha Basu], an upcoming model. He has a hardworking secretary Sophia [Katrina Kaif] who secretly likes him. Ranvir was planning to propose Sonia, but he comes to know that Rajiv loves Sonia. Rajiv promises to leave alcohol if he gets Sonia. Ranvir sacrifices his love for his brother’s better life. Rajiv and Sonia get married. But after marriage also Rajiv does not change and keeps drinking. Upset with his younger brother’s lifestyle and spoiling Sonia’s life, the guilt in Ranvir gets close to Sonia. With the boom of affair between them Ranvir starts getting more and more disturbed. As he feared, Rajiv comes to know about the affair and a crime is committed. To add fire to the burning house comes Inspector R.D [Anil Kapoor] and his dull witted secretary Mini [Sameera Reddy]. What happens next is not to be read but to be seen…
Writer Shiraz Ahmed’s screenplay is crisp and pacy. Though the story part has too many loop holes and cinematic liberties are taken. But the pace of the movie is strong enough to dilute these errors. The twist and turns are good and works in favour of the movie.
Ravi Yadav’s cinematography captures the spirit of Durban. He gives the movie a pacy effect with his camera work. The fast chasing cars, the horse races, the bird eye view of the town, the steamy scenes between Saif and Bipasha, etc. all these elements gives you the feel of a Hollywood movie.
Hussain burmawala’s experience shows in this movie. He has maintained the pace flow in the movie. One only wished the songs were bit less or maybe half. The pace would had been more in the movie.
Pritam’s music is pacy and works with the feel of the movie. The problem is that the songs are too many, which breaks the continuity of the movie. ‘Allah duhai hain’, ‘pehli nazar mein’, and ‘touch me’ are worth a watch.
Abbas Mustan, the pioneer of thriller movies in Hindi after Vijay Anand. They have delivered excellent work in the past like Khiladi, Baazigar, Humraaz, Ajnabee, Soilder and Aitraaz. But their recent movies were not up to the mark. Race does not overcome the best list but surely overcomes the last few works of Abbas Mustan. This movie shows that the spark which they had is still there and we can expect to see more from them. They have given everything they can…from pacy entertainment. to double cross. to plotting etc. including of their lucky mascot Johnny Lever. It looks like they are saying ” Picture abhi baaki hain mere dost”.
On the performance side… Saif Ali Khan has the author backed role and has done with total grace. This movie will be in his good films list, but does not overcome any of his past excellent performances. Akshay Khanna is perfect when it come to such types of role. He is one actor on whom the good and the bad character suits perfectly. Bipasha Basu has a good role and has done her job up to the mark. Katrina Kaif did not suit the character of Sophia. Her role and her appearance both did not appeal in the movie. Sameera Reddy as a dumb secretary reminds of Kitty of Karamchand. Last but not the least Anil Kapoor, this man is so versatile. On one end He does a movie like black & white and another side a mysterious character in race. The age factor seems missing from his life. He keeps looking younger than his original age. He brings the freshness to the movie and keeps us wanting for more.
So….”bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hain dum???”
Dum hain...pace bhi hain, par expectations se thodi kam hain. but with so many holidays, no big release before or after, big star cast, etc race many reasons to pace itself at the box office. But for me yeh ek ‘Race’ Aabas Mustan ke naam.
