Rajat Kapoor was born in 1961 in old city part of Delhi, India. After finishing college, at the age of 21 he had joined his father's printing press. To fill the void of separation of his old time girlfriend in his life he joined Alliance Francaise to learn French and joined most casually, the theatre troupe that existed there. Rajat is married to Meenal and have two kids name Tabia and Vivan.

Theatre became the driving force and the focus of his life. He along with his new friends founded a group called Chingari in 1983- and most of these friendships continue to the day and many have resulted in wonderful collaborations. Rajat Kapoor spent three years (1985-88) in FTII, Pune specialising in film direction. He learnt more in the following three years- as an apprentice. He assisted two filmmakers he admired for their creativity and their artistic integrity. He worked for two years with Kumar Shahani (on Khayalgatha and Bhavantaran) and one year with Mani Kaul (on Nazar). Rajat kapoor started his direction by making a documentary called Tarana which was based on Hindustani classical music, the only documentary he has made for Films Division. Private Detective/ Two plus two plus one was the complete title of his first feature film, a kind of a film-noir that happens in the bright summer days - so maybe it should be called a film-blanch! The next one was Hypnothesis- a short film about kidnapping that goes hysterically wrong. Tonight No Show, Must Tell Her... That I Love Her, Jojo and the Chair, Raghu Romeo, Mixed Doubles and Mithya (2008) are films directed by Rajat kapoor till date. As an actor Rajat Kapoor start by acting in an advertisement. Then another, and another - and before he knew it, He was a model and soon- a television actor and then a film actor. Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai was the first feature film in which he was seen and noted, he has acted in Subash Ghai’s KIsna and had a major role in the film but the failure of the film could not help him boost his negative acting skills. His other films as an actor include Monsoon Wedding , Chehraa, Corporate, Bombay Skies, Bheja Fry, Apna Asmaan. He was last seen in Sudhir Mishra’s Khoya Khoya Chand (2007)

Rajat kapoor won National Film Award Best Regional Film (Hindi) for Raghu Romeo (2003) in 2004.
