Rajiv Rai was born in 1955 in Mumbai, India, He is son of movie mogul Gulshan Rai, who has produced mammoth blockbusters like Deewar and Trishul, Rajiv Rai himself is today counted amongst the biggest names in showbiz.

Rai had started his career as a director and hit success with his debut film Yudh, which starred Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor and Tina Munim. During the making of his superhit film, Tridev, Rajiv fell in love with one of the actresses of the movie, Sonam. The fire ignited on both the sides and before the film could even get released, the two were married - the marriage was one of the most talked about marriages in town - for Sonam was considered one of the 'hottest' and 'sexiest' actresses of her times. She left filmdom after marriage but there were nosey people who thought the marriage would not last for the age difference was a huge one - Rajiv is seventeen years elder to Sonam. But they have quitened everyone by remaining together in all ups and downs of life. Talking of downs, this ace director saw the most deadly down of his life when he was attacked by some underworld attacks. Luckily, he escaped this murderous attempt on his life almost three years ago and left the country and its people. He decided to remain underground for a while but how can a director of his calibre remain anonymous for so long. Rajiv has at last come out of his self imposed exile. The maker of slick blockbusters like Yudh, Tridev, Vishwatma, Mohra and Gupt is back after facing a period of introspection. His film Pyar Ishq Aur Mohabbat was the first Hindi film in recent times to have 'sync sound' where no dubbing is required. The Arjun Rampal-Priyanka Chopra starrer, Asambhav, which released in 2004, was the last film directed by Rai

Rajiv Rai maintains a low profile, he lives in US, for the last few years. The director has written a script for an English film and is currently working on the cast of the film. The film has tentatively been titled Martyr. Rai is on the verge of cracking a deal with a top Hollywood production house for the same. Martyr is a film set in the pre-independence era and will largely be shot in India and England. Rai is in the country scouting for Indian and international actors to star in his film. He is also hunting for locations while he is in Mumbai. The film is expected to hit the floors soon.
