Mehra started his career as an advertisement film maker.
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra graduated from the prestigious Sri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University in 1983.
After graduating in commerce, Mehra did various jobs like door-to-door sales man, garment fabricator and so on.
Before entering into film industry, he established Flicks Motion Picture Company Private Limited in 1986 and has directed scores of television commercials for Indian and international clients such as Coke, Pepsi, Toyota, American Express and BPL.
Mehra had also directed music videos such as Aby Baby starring Amitabh Bachchan.
In June 2001, his own production company released its first full-length feature film titled Aks, starring Amitabh Bachchan. He was also writer-director of the film. Aks was moderately successful but was praised for the performances in the film.
For his Rang De Basanti, he won the Best Director awards at the 2006 Filmfare Awards and National Film Awards as well as a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
Mehra is working on a film called Paanch Kaurav - a mythical opus on the lines of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Lord of the Rings, with an estimated budget of Rs.700 million.
Rakeysh Mehra has a cooking interest - the famous Bauji ka Dhaba in a Gurgaon mall and in The Garden of the Five Senses, New Delhi.
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Pictures (ROMP) has cultivated in them an attitude to pioneer the way for the new wave and new age cinema from India, by identifying talent (writers & directors) from India and telling Indian stories to the world.
