Rambha was born on June 5,1976 in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. Vijayalakshmi was her original name. She was just 15 years of age, when she gave up her studies in the eighth standard. All that she wanted was to become a popular figure in the country. Her journey began with her maiden venture, Sargam, a Malayalam movie which released on November 28, 1992. She did a Telugu film Aa Okkati Adakku, directed by E.V.V Sathyanarayana in 1993, who changed her name to Rambha. She was also known as Amritha during those days. That film was a huge success and gave her spirits a big boost. She went on to do more South Indian films.
Rambha got her first Bollywood break in Jallaad (1995), where she played a small role. Her first lead role was in Jurmana (1996) which went unnoticed. Next in line was Jurm (1996), her first film with actor Ajay Devgan. But even that failed miserably. Judwaa (1997), was the movie which gained her the popularity she was seeking in Bollywood. She acted opposite the renowned star Salman Khan. The movie was a big hit, which she needed desperately. A lot was expected from her film Gharwali Baharwali (1998), starring opposite Anil Kapoor, but the film didn’t do as well as expected. It was below average. Bandhan (1998) was a semi-hit, which did very well in the interior circuit. She did a cameo in the film Dil Hi Dil Mein (2000) in the song ‘Oh Maria…’. Her film Krodh (2000) with Suniel Shetty failed to do well. She then did a couple of comedy flicks, Beti No.1 (2000) and Kyo Ki…Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta (2001), both of which flopped, and her career was on the downfall. In 2002, she acted in Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani which again flopped. Her last film was Dukaan: Pila House (2004) which wasn’t even heard of. Rambha is currently engaged in Shashanka Ghosh's Tamil Flick Quick Gun Murugan, where she plays the role of Mango Dolly. 'Quick Gun Murugan' spoof series on Channel V, is the brainchild of the channel creative head Shashanka Ghosh. He is now directing the small screen hit into a film with the same title.
