Ramesh Gopaldas Sipahimalani, known as Ramesh Sippy, was born on 24th November 1947, in Bombay. He is an Indian film-maker, best known for directing the popular and critically acclaimed film Sholay. He used to visit the sets of the film Sazaa, his father’s, that is G.P.Sippy’s first film, when he was 6 years old. Ramesh's got his first chance, when he played Achala Sachdev's son in Shahenshah. He worked in both, the production and direction departments of his father’s films like Johar-Mehmood in Goa and Mere Sanam. He worked for 7 years as an assistant director.

Ramesh Sippy’s directorial debut was in Andaz (1971), starring Rajesh Khanna, Shammi Kapoor and Hema Malini. It was a huge hit. The movie and music are still remembered even today. Sippy’s 2nd direction was in Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) which was a huge success as well. He completed his hat-trick with one of the greatest movies Bollywood has ever produced viz. Sholay (1975) starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar. The movie became an all-time blockbuster and is still a favourite among most people. Sippy, therefore, became one of the most popular film-makers in the industry. After Sippy’s huge success, a lot was expected from his next film Shaan (1980) starring Amitabh Bachchan once again. But the film couldn’t meet with its expectations and fell below average. The same was the fate of Shakti (1982) and Saagar (1985). All the three films were critically acclaimed, but unfortunately couldn’t become top grossers. Sippy then directed the famous tv serial Buniyaad which focused on the India and Pakistan Partition and was originally aired on Indian television channel Doordarshan in 1987. Bharashtchar (1989), Akayla (1991), Zameen (1995) and Zamana Deewana (1995) were the four films Sippy directed after that, all of which failed at the box office and since then he has not directed any film, though he produces occasionally. Sippy produced two films directed by his son Rohan, which were Kuch Naa Kaho (2003) and Bluffmaster (2005). In 2006 he produced Taxi No 9211 which was directed by Milan Luthria.

Ramesh Sippy’s forthcoming production is the much-awaited Chandni Chowk To China (2008) starring Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone. There is also another film on hand, untitled, to be directed by Rohit Shetty. In 2005 he received the Filmfare Best Film of 50 Years Award for his legendary film Sholay.
