Randhir Kapoor was born on 15 February 1947, in Bombay. He is the eldest son of the legendary figure of Bollywood Raj Kapoor and Krishna Kapoor.

Randhir Kapoor first appeared on the silver screen with the film Kal Aaj Aur Kal in 1971, which he himself directed. The film was a hit which starred three generations of the Kapoor family, including his grand-dad, Prithviraj, and his dad, Raj Kapoor. With Jawani Diwani (1972) and Raampur Ka Laxman (1972), Randhir claimed his 2nd and 3rd hits, respectively. The former starred Jaya Bhaduri and the latter Rekha, opposite him. His position in the industry strengthened. Hum Rahi (1974) and Dil Diwana (1974) did poorly. Haath Ki Safai (1974) gathered good collections. Ponga Pandit (1975) was okay. Then came a few flops like Ginny Aur Johny (1976), Bhala Manus (1976), Ram Bharose (1977), etc. Mama Bhanja (1977) was okay. Randhir’s next film Chacha Bhatija (1977) with Dharmendra was a hit and is remembered even today. Heeralal Pannalal (1978) was a nice comedy flick but didn’t do too well. He then did a couple of films which flopped, after which arrived the hit film Kasme Vaade (1978) with Amitabh Bachchan. He then acted in Biwi-O-Biwi: The Fun-Film (1981) and Harjaee (1981). Both films were just okay. Randhir also acted in the hit film Pukar (1983) alongside Amitabh Bachchan once again. He then did Khazana (1984) after which he quit acting in films for 15 years and took to producing and directing. Dharam Karam (1975) was produced and directed by Randhir, which was a flop. He then produced Henna (1991) which was at first directed by his father, but he died during the production of the film and Randhir completed the film for him. He was nominated for the Filmfare Best Director Award. He also produced Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985) starring his brother Rajiv. The film was a huge hit and it also won the Filmfare Best Movie Award. He also produced PremGranth (1996) which was the directorial debut of Rajiv and Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999) which was the directorial debut of Rishi. Randhir returned to acting with the film Mother in 1999. After another break he appeared in the film Armaan (2003). Since then he has not acted in films.
