I remember watching “NEW DELHI” as a kid and had loved the way Jeetendra manipulated with the news for his personal vengeance. Years later as grew older saw “NEW DELHI TIMES” where Sashi Kapoor kept me gasping revealing the dark side of Politics and Media. But all these films had newspaper portraying the Media. Then came “NAYAK” which showed the rise of television news, overtaking the newspaper as medium of media. But today’s scenario is total changed as now we have more News channels than the number of papers in a morning newspaper. Ram Gopal Varma, who had showed us the new face of college politics, Underworld working, Horror genre and many more different subjects, now ventures in this field keeping in mind the ongoing of today’s scenario. Sadly last few films of Ram Gopal Varma had been marching towards the downward graph and had touched the bottom line in case of few crap films. So will Ram Gopal Varma do justice to this modified subject of media ? or will it add to his last few craps and go beyond his grave dug by his camera work? Let’s find out.

“Rann” is story of a upcoming Journalist Purab {Ritesh Deshmukh} who admires and follows a Honest and genuine News Baron head Vijay Harshwardhan Malik {Amitabh Bachchan}. Vijay Malik runs a T.V news broadcasting channel India 24x7, which revels truth and only truth as he believes and follows certain code of conducts. Purab joins the channel and follows on idealism of Vijay Malik, Sadly his channel is not a ideal revenue making channel in comparison to opponent Ambrish’s {Monish Behel} channel, thus worrying his son Jay Malik {Sudeep}. Whenever Jay tries to do something new and different for the channel he is bitten to dust by his opponent. In this frustration he joins hands with his Brother in Law Navin Shankalia {Rajat Kapoor} who is favoring a opposition leader Mohan Pandey {Paresh Rawal}. Together they create news using Vijay Malik’s honesty and channels reputation and starts enjoying the new found success which boost everyone’s career. Purab starts getting suspicious and while investigating comes to know the truth. Thus starting the thrilling ride in the world of Media.

Story is different and apt as per today’s times. But the screenplay is so tight and gripping that despite of being a heavy subject you don’t lose your focus from the film for a second also. There are so many brilliant scenes like Rajpal-Ritesh intro scene, Amitabh-Rajat dinner scene, Rajpal-Gul in party, Paresh Rawals take on Kanoon, Manipulating K.K.Raina’s bytes, Ritesh interviewing Paresh Rawal, Monish-Ritesh scene and Climax. You will enjoy all these power pack scenes for sure. Also check out the Title scenes in the beginning followed by brilliant way of ending it in last shot.

Camera work is bad and shoddy, but better than Ram Gopal Varma’s last few work. But still most of scenes are shot abruptly, illogically. The impact of the film mellows out due to this bad work. It’s so annoying to see cut heads of the actors especially Amitabh Bachchan and in few scenes even the eyes are cut from the scene. This is the biggest let down and negative point of the film.

Music is average, but Gali Gali mein shor hain shines out from the lot. Background music is bit loud at times.

I was a great fan of Ram Gopal Varma especially in his early days of career, sadly his last few work weaken my respect and admiration for him. I had almost given up for him, so I could still hold and respect the earlier work that I loved. But out here when I saw the first promo, I felt the spark and thus raised the hope of coming back of the director. And to a certain point Ram Gopal Varma comes back, but not his best. Still full marks to him for utilizing all his actors and subject, though on personal front needed it to be more hard hitting, I would had loved if this movie would had been directed by the Ram Gopal Varma of a decade ago.

One cannot imagine anyone else than Mr.Bachchan in this role. Though his role is not full fledged but is the most important character in the film. It’s in the climax where he gets his chance to shine above everyone else. Check him and his expressions when he see the truth in the climax and the scene followed after that- simply mind blowing. Ritesh Deshmukh shows us that he can do much better than the comical roles, but still could had done more to the character. Sudeep has a role which is one of the best role in the film, at many points he delivers what he had to, but at few he misses the bus and overdoes it. Neetu Chandra is screechy and looks bad. Monish Behel, Gul Panang, Rajat Kapoor, Suchitra Krishnamurty essays their role perfectly and shines out in certain scenes. Rajpal Yadav’s take on crap news reader is perfect. Paresh Rawal returns back to his villain roles after a long time and impresses a lot. Rest all were ok.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hain dum?

Dum hain, Dumdaar hain and total gripping hain. Still somewhere we wish it had been more hard hitting or had some twist or turns in the predictable end, but thanks to the performances and superb screenplay the movie is total interesting. It’s a great attempt by Ram Gopal Varma to make a film on today’s scenario of T.V News channels and not making it preachy at all. As a lead character in the film tells Sudeep that News is a sort of film direct to the point minus the glam sham, same goes out here but in a more positive and interesting manner. After watching this film if you see Rakhi Sawant screaming “Media ko bulao, Media ko bulao” you know what to do… the same as Ritesh does in the last shot.
