‘Rann’ tells the story of Vijay Harshavardhan Malik( Amitabh Bachchan) , the head of a news channel, who commands respect in society, for practicing ethics in journalism. But, the committed journalist becomes a victim, due to unethical practices adopted by his over ambitious son Jai Malik( Sudeep) . Jai, on the advice of his industrialist brother-in-law Navin( Rajat Kapoor) and a corrupt politician Mohan Pandey( Paresh Rawal), forces his father to expose the Prime Minister in a bogus sting operation case. A new recruit journalist Barun( Reitesh Deshmukh) who is a great admirer of Vijay Malik, is shocked to know the truth behind the operation. He approaches the COO ( Suchitra), who advises him to keep quiet for some time and later suggests him to expose the father & son duo, with the help of rival group channel head Amrish ( Mohnish Behl).
When Barun hands over the evidence of bogus sting operation to Amrish, he in turn sells it to the Politician for a big price. Barun, who is helpless, decides to expose Amrish to teach him a lesson. He takes a last chance of approaching Vijay Malik directly, who is shocked to learn about the truth. In the climax of the film Vijay Malik admits his mistake openly on his channel and quits as the chief, after exposing the rival channel head, his own son and the corrupt politician. He hands over the responsibilities to Barun, to run the channel.
With this sensational sting operation based theme, Ram Gopal Varma has not only opened the can of worms in media profession, but has also exposed certain behind the screen unethical deals of media barons. From start to finish, the director has paid full attention on his subject without any deviation. ‘Rann’ is a serious thought provoking film, inviting the attention of society towards the dark side of News media.
