  • Love the 4 Rascals-Ajay,Sanju,David & Sanjay Chhel

Rascals rating: 7 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 05 Oct 2011)

David Dhawan has always tried to entertain its audience with films inspired by old classic comical hits from Hindi Cinema, followed by comedy films of Hollywood in recent past. His 90’s style had certain actors, Comedians and a certain director style. But lately his films started losing the stock actors, style and comedians. With few flops and few enjoyable treats, he comes back with his latest offering – ‘Rascals’. Let’s find out if this movie might be one of those David Dhawan’s lost touch films or might add to his comic capers.

“Rascals” is story of two con-men’s Chetan [Sanjay Dutt] and Bhagat [Ajay Devgan] who separately con Anthony [Arjun Rampal]. With the loot money they decide to holiday in Bangkok and on the way tries to con each other. Out there they meet a rich socialite Khushi [Kangana Ranaut] and both fall in love with her and her money. Thus starts the cat and mouse chase between Chetan and Bhagat to win the heart of Khushi by hook or crook.

Story has lots of similarities from David’s own classic comedy – “Deewana Mastana” and Rakesh Roshan’s “Khel” {which was inspired by a classic Hollywood film}. But the movie belongs to its Screenplay writers and most important Dialog writer {Sanjay Chhel}. The movie boost of some hilarious fantastic scenes like - The Animated titles, Sanju – Ajay’s first meet, Chunky Pandey’s first scene with Ajay and Sanjay Dutt, The whole Art of Giving track of Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgans blind man story, Chasme Buddoor drops, Ajay Devgan sharing incident between him and Kanagana being wet in bedroom to Sanjay Dutt, Sanju irritating Kangana with Coffee, Sanjay – Ajay tiff with each other in pub followed by dialogs from their respective films, Sanju’s nagnamukasan aasan, Ajay Devgans speech at naval ball, Bank robbery plans, Kangana’s reality, Guzaarish spoof and few more. On the flip side the Ajay Devgan’s suicide scene was too loud and unwanted, followed by Satish Kaushik track and a hurried climax. The first half of the film is total laughter riot, but as the second half starts the graph starts going towards the decline mark. Still thanks to the superb one liner and some funny moments you are back on the track. Camera work is good and all locations are nice. Editing is fantastic in first half but a minor trimming would have been welcomed in the second half.

Music by Vishal Shekhar is kind of average. One does need chartbusters songs in such type of Masala Entertainer. Still songs like ‘Shake It Saiyaan’ & ‘Rascals’ goes well with the film. But ‘Tuk Tuk’ and ‘Parda’ could have been avoided.

David Dhawan tried to change his style and give us a remixed avatar of ‘Deewana Mastana’ and ‘Khel’ but with today’s style of Masala Entertainers. His way of film narration is swift that one hardly has time to think about the negative points. Its only towards the end you realize that something more was required towards the hurried climax.

Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan both are superb in this film. Both complement each other with their style and expertise in comedy. Kangana might attract lots of male fans, thanks to her Skin show. She was fine as a dumb bimbo. Chunky Pandey was awesome. Satish Kaushik was unwanted. Lisa looked hot. Hiten Paintal was wasted. Arjun Rampal looked misfit in this film.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai total time pass masala entertainer hai. With a fast and total hilarious first half, followed by super one liner and fine performances by the lead actors, this movie might appeal to all Masala entertainers. Forget the weak music, some unwanted scenes and bit of hurried climax and full your popcorn tub to enjoy this latest version of ‘Deewana Mastana’ and ‘Khel’. The jokes and funny one liners followed by one by one hilarious situation works for this film with a thin story line.

I am sure after watching this movie people will love the work of Four ‘Rascals’ – Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, David Dhawan [Director] & Sanjay Chhel [Dialogs].

Ratings – 3.75 / 5 [For pure fun and entertainment]

P.S - For Non-Masala Entertainer lovers; pls avoid as this movie belongs to people looking out for pure fun.
