Reema Lagoo was born Nayan Bhadbhade in 1958. Her mother was a renowned actress on Marathi stage. Her acting abilities were noted while she was studying at the Huzurpaga HHCP High school in Pune. Her professional acting started soon after finishing high school. Her first acting performances were on Marathi stage. She entered Bollywood with a dance performance in Govind Nihalani’s film Aakrosh (1980).
Reema’s acting career in Bollwyood kick-started with her small role in Kalyug (1981) and then in Chatpati (1983). Since then she has been doing supporting roles in most films and has acted alongside the biggies of the industry. In 1988 she made a comeback with Hamara Khandaan starring Rishi Kapoor. Her first hit movie of her career was Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) in which she played the role of the heroine’s mother. Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) became an all-time blockbuster, in which she played the hero’s (Salman) mother, and since then has played his mother’s role in many films. She has mostly been portrayed as a very loving mother in most films. 1990 onwards Reema acted in several films, most of which did well. Police Public (1990) was a semi-hit.The musical Aashiqui (1990) became a hit, especially the songs of the film are remembered even today. Her other noteworthy films are Patthar Ke Phool (1991), Henna (1991), Saajan (1991), Shola Aur Shabnam (1992). Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) became another all-time blockbuster. Dilwale (1994) was a hit too. Yeh Dillagi (1994) and Vijaypath (1994) faired well too. Reema’s performance in Naajayaz (1995) was praised. Rangeela (1995), Judwaa (1997), Yes Boss (1997), Deewana Mastana (1997) did well at the box-office. Prem Granth (1996) proved to be a major disaster. Pyar To Hona Hi Tha (1998) was a super-hit and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) became an all-time blockbuster. Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United didn’t do as well as expected, but her performance was appreciated especially for the negative shades in her character that she portrayed. Aarzoo (1999) wasn’t much appreciated. Vaastav: The Reality (1999) was the film that won her many accolades for her strong performance. Reema continued to play the soft mother roles in films like Kya Kehna (2000), Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hain (2000), Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye (2000) and Tera Mera Saath Rahen (2001) all of which failed to make much impression on the audience, except for Kya Kehna. Her performance in Nidaan (2000) was widely appreciated. Hathyar (2002) and Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon (2003) couldn’t live upto their expectations and failed at the box-office. Kal Ho Na Ho (2003) was a big hit. Sandwich (2006) and Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar (2006) were failures.
Reema changed her name to Reema Lagoo after marriage. She has appeared on the Marathi show Maanacha Muzra, which honours Marathi personalities. She has acted in few TV serials like Khandaan (1985), Shriman Shrimati (1993), Tu Tu Main Main (2000) and Kadvee, Khatti, Meethi (2006).
