Renuka Roy was born in Kolkata in the year 1921. Her father’s name was Kashinath Dhar. Her surname was “Dhar”, but director Chani Dutta while shooting for his film “Kash Dhakal” changes her surname to “Roy”. For family reasons she could not continue her studies after primary education from Gouribari Balika Bidyalaya.
She made her debut in the film “Debdasi” in the year 1935. She appeared in the film in the role of a dencer. The film was directed by Pramathes Barua. In her 33 years of film career she has acted in about 150 films. Her major films were, “Sahar Theke Dure” (1943), “Mej Didi” (1950), “Sesh Anko” (1962), “Nirjan Saikate” (1963), “Baghini” (1968) etc. She joined Purna Theetre as a ballet dancer when she was only 5. Here she was introduced with actress Umasashi. She started learning the art of acting from Uma.
She regularly take part in commercial stage, radio drama and disc drama. She knew singing. She had her own disc. She has also acted in some early Hindi films. She married Dhirendra Lal Dhar. Her married life was not very happy. So they were separated. She was mother of two sons and one daughter. Renuka Roy died on February 8th, 1968.
