Rishi Kapoor was born on 4 September 1952, in Mumbai. He belongs to the legendary clan of Bollywood – the Kapoor family.

Rishi Kapoor coaxed his father into giving him a chance in his film, and he managed to get selected for his home production Mera Naam Joker (1970) in which he played the child’s role of his father. The movie won many accolades. His first film as the main lead was Bobby (1973) alongside Dimple, which gained him instant fame and was also known as the Prince of Romance. The movie became a blockbuster. Rishi did a couple films which flopped, before he got a couple of hits in 1975 with Rafoo Chakkar and Khel Khel Mein, both starring opposite Neetu Singh. His next film Laila Majnu (1976) with Ranjeeta Kaur was a blockbuster. Rishi’s hold in the industry only grew stronger with time. Kabhi Kabhie – Love Is Life (1976), starring alongside Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor, gave Rishi another hit in his kitty. 1977 proved to be a great year with all three of his films doing really well viz. Amar Akbar Anthony, Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin and Doosra Aadmi. Then came Mahesh Bhatt’s Naya Daur (1978) which didn’t do so well. Badaltey Rishtey (1979) did quite well. His movie Sargam (1979) with Jayapradha was a superhit. Duniya Meri Jeb Mein (1979), starring Rishi and Neetu once again, unfortunately didn’t do so well. 1980 brought Rishi some good fortune with two of his films viz. Aap Ke Deewane and Karz being widely appreciated, though their collections weren’t too big. His other films in 1981 all of which did well, are remembered even today viz. Katilon Ke Kaatil alongside Dharmendra, Naseeb alongside Amitabh Bachchan, and Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai, co-starring Padmini Kolhapure. In 1982, Prem Rog became a huge hit, while Yeh Vaada Raha lagged behind. Coolie (1983) alongside Amitabh Bachchan was again a huge hit. Duniya (1984) and Zamana (1984), both directed by Ramesh Talwar, failed to gather enough collections at the box-office, despite strong performances. Rishi’s 2nd film with Dimple, after Bobby, was Saagar (1985) which was highly acclaimed. Nagina (1986) was a huge hit. Ek Chadar Maili Si (1986) was a good film. Hamara Khandaan (1988), Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani (1988) and Gharana (1989) were okay. Chandni (1989) won many accolades. 1991 was one of the worst years for Rishi with a spree of flops in Ajooba, Ghar Parivar and Banjaran. Henna (1991) was just average. 1992 was a mixed year with Deewana and Bol Radha Bol doing extremely well, while Inteha Pyar Ki and Honeymoon flopped. Sahibaan (1993) flopped, while Damini – The Lightning (1993) was a hit. Rishi’s career graph started moving downwards with Eena Meena Deeka (1994), Pehla Pehla Pyar (1994), Saajan Ki Baahon Mein (1995), Hum Dono (1995), Yaraana (1995), Prem Granth (1996), his own production, and Daraar (1996), all doing poorly. Rishi then started doing supporting roles in films like Raju Chacha (2000), Karobaar: The Business of Love (2000), Yeh Hai Jalwa (2002), Kucch To Hai (2003), all of which failed to do well. Later he did Hum Tum (2004), Fanaa (2006) and Namastey London (2007) all of which were big hits. Rishi also directed a film titled Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999), starring Akshaye Khanna and Aishwarya Rai, which was quite good but still didn’t do great business.

Rishi Kapoor has a few films on hand now, like Luck By Chance (2008) also starring Saif Khan and Konkana Sen, Sadiyaan (2008) also starring Shabana Azmi and Rekha, Dilli 6 (2008) with Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor and Kunal Kohli’s next film, yet to be titled. Rishi is also known as Chintu. Rishi is the second son of famous film director and star Raj Kapoor. His brothers are well-known actors: Randhir Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor. Rishi is the paternal uncle of today's actresses Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. Rishi married actress Neetu Singh, with whom he acted in several hit movies, in 1980. They have two children viz. Ranbir Kapoor who is new generation hearththrob, currently dating Deepika Padukone and Ridhima Kapoor.
