  • Proud to be born in the land of Gandhiji….

Road To Sangam rating: 9 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 30 Jan 2010)

When we were small our school showed us a film called GANDHI. At that time despite of being small had loved the life and thought of the father of our nation. I remember at that time I had so many questions and doubts regd Gandhiji and wanted to know more and more about him. Whenever I use to go to Chowpatty beach in Mumbai, there use to be a poster of Gandhiji running with a kid and I use to feel his love for kids and in a way for me too. Slowly as i grew up and like majority of us the love, feelings, curiosity, etc started to fade out and was reserved for some special days like 15th Aug or 26th Jan or 2nd Oct. But few years back Rajkumar Hirani bought back the idealism of Gandhiji in a different avatar, an avatar where even today’s generation started to respect him , which got him out of the books and landed in their heart. Now Director Amit Rai tells us another simple yet touching tale which talks about the most respected man of India-Gandhiji.

“Road to Sangam” is story of Husmatullah {Paresh Rawal}, a mechanic running his shop in crowded streets of Allahabad. He is General Secretary of his Masjid committee which is leaded by Mohammad Ali Kasuri {Om Puri} and Maulana Qureshi {Pawan Malhotra}. Husmatullah is approached by some Government people for repair work of a vintage 60years old car engine. He gracefully accepts it without knowing the purpose. At same time bomb blast rocks the U.P state and government takes a tough stand where they end up arresting some innocent Muslim people. In return the Masjid committee decides to take action and order for closure of their shops. Meanwhile Husmatullah comes to know that the engine he is repairing belongs to the vehicle which carried the last ashes of Mahatma Gandhi. Slowly he starts drawing towards Gandhiji and decides to revolt against the committee but in peaceful manner. Does he achieve in doing what his soul wanted or did he break down against the pressure of Masjid committee, well for that you got to watch the film.

Story is innovative, simple and said direct from the heart. You don’t need a story with loads of twist and turns or some path breaking script to say something nice. Screenplay is good and simple, could had been better. But I guess the makers made the film keeping in mind the concept and not the technical issues. Editing needed to be bit tight in second half, but still is acceptable. Camera work is superb.

Music is good and it was nice to hear voices of Kavita Krishnamurty and Hariharan after ages.

Director Amit Rai deserves a pat on his back for making such a different and unusual film with a great message in it. Without being preachy he managed to deliver what he wanted to. He did not succumb to the typical bollywood type of scenes or drama and went ahead with his own pace and sweet way of narrating this simple tale made with good thoughts. There are so many scenes which portrays great message. Though one does find many similarities to Balraj Sahani’s classic film “GARAM HAWA”.

Paresh Rawal delivers another award winning performance. You take out Paresh Rawal from this film and you will find soul missing from one’s body. Pawan Malhotra, Om Puri, javed Sheikh, etc were good support. All other newcomers looked amateur but added sweetness and simplicity to the film. It was great to see Tusshar Gandhi after HEY RAM in this film.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Jab baat Gandhiji ki aaye to dum to hona hi hain. If you are expecting some outstanding path breaking cinema or a typical masala entertainer then this is not your cup of tea. We are so lucky that we had a great soul like Gandhiji who was biggest reason for stopping the riots of that time, I wished he was with us for more years, we would had more peace and brotherhood between us. This movie belongs to those simple and common man like me who loved Gandhiji and do care for their motherland, peace and harmony. And if you belong to the above mentioned group, then go and watch this film and be proud to be born in the land of Gandhi.
