Rocket Singh - Salesman Of The Year rating: 7 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 11 Dec 2009)

Kapoor’s are known for their natural and superb performance name it Sashi Kapoor having a combo of international and realistic films, Shammi Kapoor having combo of Romantic hero with charming fun loving image, Rishi Kapoor having combo of Romantic and Performance oriented films and last but not the least Shri Raj Kapoor the mega film maker and actor. All these actors have one more thing in common other than sharing the surname, they all are natural actors and don’t copy or are inspired by any other actors. They themselves have formed their own niche and style which is being copied by various actors from the industry. The new kid from the block is Ranbir Kapoor who too has his own style and is a natural actor. This year he gave us two films where his character’s of a looser in life and looser in love was appreciated and were successful too. Now he comes back with another story of a looser in work, will he be different? Or bear same repetitive performance from his last films? Let’s find out.

“Rocket Singh” is story of Harpreet Singh{Ranbir Kapoor} a fresh college graduate who is just average performer in his studies living with his grandfather {Prem Chopra}. With such low grades and lower middle class background decides to join Sales industry as he is confident on his marketing skills. He joins a computer selling firm name “AVS” and start learning the secreat of the Sales trade. But once he does something which angers his superior Nitin {Naveen Kaushik} and their boss Mr.Puri {Manish Chaudhary}. Being correct he still faces humiliation among his colleagues and superiors. He is pressured to surrender to the corrupt system, but instead he decides to work on his own way and gets support from his other colleagues like Giri{D.Santosh}, Koyna {Gahur Khan} and Mishra{Mukesh Bhatt}. Together they start a small firm in a name of Rocket Singh and approach the client and give them the best deal and service. Thus starting the multiple events and a good career for all of them till their boss finds out.

Story is simple and different than run of the mills type stories. The backdrop is of sales industry but can be related with any other industry. Screenplay is superb in first half of the film and continues perfectly till the anti climax where it fails to rise above the earlier part of the film. There are some superb scenes like Ranbir exploring the field of sales with Nitin, The whole Zero thing lecture by Mr.Puri, Ranbir and Lalwani talks, Mishra’s Outburst, Nitin’s Confession and the climax shot. Dialogs of this film are so crisp and apt as per the film’s requirement. The best line is “Risk to Spiderman bhi leta hain, main to ek salesman hu”. Editing is perfect in first half but required to trim or pace out the second half in some parts. Camera work is good and captures the mood of the film.

Music is decent and works well in the background.

Shimit Amin returns back to direction after super hit film Chak De India and needs guts to make a simple film after such a big hit. He does not lose his focus anywhere in the film and goes perfect with the subject. All the minute details are captured perfectly and the movie goes perfect. But somewhere in second half lies flat especially in the anti climax scenes and slows down on the pace and story level. We do expect something either hard hitting or touchy in those parts which do not rise up to the expectations. But returns back to its feel good part in the climax shot and proves that films does not need dramatic twist and turns to end it.

Ranbir Kapoor portrays a exactly opposite character than what he played in Wake Up Sid and thus wins hearts again of the audience. He proves that he is an versatile actor and can proudly say that he belongs to the legendary Kapoor;s Family. He has moved much ahead than his fellow actors and have even out past some of his senior actors too in terms of performance, character following and star charisma. Gauhar Khan, Shazahn Padamsee, Mukesh Bhatt are good. Naveen Kaushik and D. Santosh have done a great job along with Manish Chaudhary. It was good to see Prem Chopra in this role after a long time.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hain dum ?

Kaafi dum hain and kaafi alag hain. A feel good film with decent performances set on a different subject. Might be bit preachy for the mango people but will connect with many on the theme and performance basis for sure. After enjoying Ranbir Kapoor in Wake up Sid and Ajab Prem check him in this different avatar which surely makes him versatile actor of this year.
