  • Starry Romance….

Rockstar rating: 9 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 11 Nov 2011)

In our Hindi films from last so many decades we have been witnessing the Singing Star, Dancing Star, Disco Star, Etc. But if you see the facts all these were just ‘Filmi’ avatars. We never saw females rushing for a one song performer or are craze of nation in those eras. But now from last decade things have been changing. With growing number of Music channels and exposure to world culture, Reality shows, Rock Café’s, etc - Finally we have been witnessing the Pop or Rock type American culture in our own Desi land. With films like Jhankaar Beat, Rock On, London Dreams and many more, looks like the whole Pop/Rock Culture is the current flavor. Some of them had the mass appeal and entertaining subject, rest were just following the fad. But we still need more hard hitting proper musical with lots of shows, rock music, Dark theme and most important bit of realistic pain. Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar is the latest addition to this list, let’s find out if this film will take these films to another level in Indian cinema or might be just another film trying to cash in the fad.

“Rockstar “ is story of Janardhan/JJ/ Jordon [Ranbir Kapoor] who dreams to become a Rockstar. Despite of being highly talented, he misses out due to his looks, Style, Attitude and burning desire. His well wisher Khatana { Kumud Mishra} advises him to get the burning desire inside him, which can be only felt if one feels Pain in his life or is heartbroken in love. Thus JJ decides to fall in for the most beautiful girl in his college campus - Heer {Nargis Fakri}. He tries his level best to fall in love with her, but cannot get the feeling. Later Heer and JJ become best of friends and slowly develop a deep bonding between each other. Does the bond help JJ become Jordan the Rockstar he dreamt of ? Well that what the entire movie about.

Story is simple and one liner, but it’s the phases which count. Screenplay has some wonderful moments like Ranbir proposing to Nargis, Nargis-Ranbir’s chat and visit to ‘Jangli Jawani’, The Desi Daru scene, Ranbirs version of ‘Tareef Karu Kya Uski’, Piyush Mishra’s Massage, Ranbir in his friend’s party, Piyush contract scene, The Phone call between Ranbir and Nargis, The whole hospital scene and many more. The whole romantic track between Ranbir and Nargis works well in favor of the movie whether it’s the Masti scene or the Kissing scenes or the Pain full scenes. The first half is entertaining and fast pace, the second half becomes bit slow and at some point bit dragging leading to a classy climax {Which might not go well with the masses}. The razor sharp editing gives the international feel to the film, but at times leaves some minor loopholes or some queries. Still a little of editing was required in the second half. Camera work by Anil Mehta is of top notch. All the Concerts, Events, Romantic Locations, etc have been covered superbly.

‘Rockstar’ definitely adds to A.R.Rahman’s best music list. His style of music for this film is superb and one can find the maestro back in form with this film. After a long time we had a dedicated singer for the lead actor. Songs like Jo bhi main, Katiya karu, Phir Se, Kunf Aaya, Hawa Hawa, Meri Bebasi, Sadda Haq, Naadaan Parindey and Tum Ho are the best songs from the album; beautifully shot and placed in the film. Sadly Shehar Mein was one of the most badly placed songs followed by Main To. All the instrumental music including the Jugalbandi of Shehnai with Guitar [Performed by Ranbir and Shammi Kapoor] added the flavor to the film.

Imtiaz Ali is highly know for his blockbuster film ‘Jab We Met’ which was one of his most commercial and mass oriented film But I still feel his best was ‘Socha Na Tha’. ‘Rockstar’ is between these two films, it has huge canvas but lacks the mass appeal [especially in the climax scene]. He has proved that when it comes to Romantic story telling he is at present the current Yash Chopra of our times. Out here too he tells us a romantic sage between Ranbir and Nargis but with a very high backdrop or camouflage of Rock Music or Making of Rockstar. His fans might have a divided opinion as some might feel the Dark element was bit less and other might feel the entertaining content was somewhere low to his past films. But try to see this movie with a total different angel and then only you will love this different experiment from the film maker.

Ranbir Kapoor is rocking!!. He has a very high star value with good quality of a performing actor. Out here he experiments with his various looks and succeeds in adding the value to the films content. His Simplicity, Aggression, Pain and love shines out. Definitely an award winning performance from his side. With all his movies he is growing more and more and moving far ahead than his contenders. Nargis Fakri looks beautiful and delivers a fine performance. Check her in the ‘Masti’ scenes with Ranbir. Piyush Mishra is funny. Kumud Mishra and Shernaz Patel gives good support. Shammi Kapoor is wasted, but it’s a treat to see him on screen, especially in the Jugalbandi scene with Ranbir.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai bahut dum hai – Thanks to wonderful music by A.R.Rahman and fantastic performance by Ranbir Kapoor. The movie has soul, which is rarely seen in recent films. The movie might not meet the high expectations of all Imtiaz, Ranbir and Rahman fans. But will definitely not disappoint them also. As for Rock genre lovers, the movie raises the bar and delivers a different side to it which I would term as a Starry Romance.
