Two steps backwards............................................
Just 2 months ago,I watched "Challenge" ,which gave me a little hope that bengali commercial film industry is trying to break out of its low-graded commercialism. If "Challenge" was a step forward for shree venkatesh films,"saat pake bandha" is two steps backwards move for them. One is not astonished at the fact that the film is a ditto copy of a hindi movie(Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rahte Hain) because most of the movies of shree venkatesh are unabashed copies of films like Maine Pyaar Kiya,Kadhaal(South Indian),Pyaar to hona hi tha etc.One can also forgive the unrealistic action sequences as they are common in all bengali films.
But ,one cannot digest the serious loopholes in the script, wayward direction and an ending ,which like the hindi version is bizarre. The storyline is simple-Industrialist Subhankar Banerjee (Ranjit mullick)calls back his son Rahul(jeet) to give him marriage and chooses his P.A pallabi(koel).Rahul agrees to marry but on a contract of one year.Pallabi's faltering economic condition made her accept this in the hope that Rahul would be nice enough to prolong this contract to eternity by falling in love .with her. But Rahul turns out not so sensitive to prolong their marriage after one year and forces pallabi to split. After the split,Rahul realises his mistake and asks pallabi to come back ,but pallabi refuses.Rahul tries various means to win her heart but fails.Eventually Rahul and pallabi unite on hospital bed, with pallabi, giving birth to their child and Rahul, being stabbed by goons.
There are plenty of logical loopholes,e.g-how come pallabi becomes pregnant when rahul and pallabi were awarely in a contract marriage and rahul did not love pallabi from his heart during that phase.
N.K.Salil's script has scarcely been impressive, this film is no exception.Sujit Mondal, the director probably gave more emphasis to reviving the jeet-koel chemistry than the basic points of the storyline, that's why the movie remains "unreal" from the start to end.Except Ranjit mullick, all of the supporting cast are weak.Subhashish is given the job of evoking a few laughs, and he fails miserably. One does laugh though seeing the tantrums and a quest to
achieve suicide by pallabi's sisters, and also Jeet in some scenes, looking completely out of place.
But the fact that this movie has turned out a big hit(second only to challenge)is because of some areas in which it scores.Jeet-Koel are not only back as onscreen couple, but their chemistry has grown with time. They make a few good scenes together in 1st half.Another plus are the camerawork and music by jeet ganguly who continues to set high standards in music."Boro eka eka lagey amar","Ami bonophool","Bolo piya" and"Swapno"all are melodious and rightly placed in the film.
So, overall a film ,that is only remembrable for the Jeet-Koel sizzling chemistry and music, and for viewers starving from lack of good hindi movies for three months, that might be enough for a one-time watch
