Sabitri was born on 22nd February 1937 at Kumilla now in Bangladesh. Her father was Sasadhar Chattopadhay. For a few years she studied at Victoria School.
Her first film was “Pasher Bari” directed by Sudhir Mukhopadhay. Before that she acted in drama “Natun Ehudi” where Binu Bardhan was assistant director. Binu introduced her to director Sudhir Mukhopadhay. Sabitri acted in atleast 200 bengali films or more, including “Maru Thirtha Hinglaj”, “Kuhak”, “Gali Theke Rajpath”, “Pratham Pratisruti” etc. She acted with Uttam Kumar in many film as heroine.
She got appreciation from President Rajendra Prasad, Prime Minister Jahar Lal Nehru for her acting as a def and dumb woman in “Shyamali”. She was also associated with the Professional stage. She got BFJA awards many times as best actress and co-actress. She acted in TV serials and telefilms.
