Avik Basu, the son of famous but poor singer, goes to a picnic with his university friends. There he meets Shukla, another student of a different university. They fall in love. Avik, also a budding singer, makes grand promises to her. Soon Avik's father dies during his first radio programme. Avik, forced to find a job, can't get any. Shukla an orphan living with her uncle and widowed sister waits for Avik. Poverty grasps Avik's family. The landlord threatens his mother for money. His younger sister, Shyamali falls in love with a rich boy. Shyamali takes money for her family from him and gives her everything. Soon it is revealed that Shyamali is pregnant and her friend is going to be married to another girl. Shyamali commits suicide by hanging herself. Avik, with his friends, beats him and sends him to jail. Avik's friend Amal in the meanwhile becomes an important person in event management. So he gives Avik a good break. A famous female singer, Beladevi listens to his songs and offers him an opportunity in Mumbai. Seeing no other option before him, Avik agrees. He comes to Mumbai and gets shelter at Bela's flat. Bela gives him a break. He gets fame and money. His mother decides to see Bela as her daughter-in-law, but when comes to know about Shukla, she accepts her. Shyamali's boyfriend gets released from jail and vows to take revenge. Shukla is very sick and wants to see Avik. Avik meets with an accident and gets injured. He is admitted in the same nursing home where Shukla is admitted. They meet again, but Shukla dies. At her death bed, Shukla gives Avik's responsibility to Bela.
